Hi All,

I have an A700 that will not auto-focus with lens that rely on in-body AF (i.e. screw driven) like the SAL1870. It works fine with in-lens AF lenses like the SAL70300G.

1) Is this a common problem? and
2) Is it easily repaired?

Thanks... Brian

Does it not respond at all, or just hunt for focus and not lock on?

Hi Basil, It does not respond at all. I have toggled AF/MF to no effect and tested my SAL1870 on an A77. The lens focuses on the A77 without any problem.

Thanks... Brian

Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the the lens?
Also try re-mounting the lens. A slight twist more may do the trick.

Thanks, Basil. I'll give that a try and report back.

Hi Theo, No. I've tried S, A, & C from the focus selector dial and toggled the AF/MF button with no success. The battery is also fully charged.

Basil, cleaning the contacts on the lens and the pins on the camera did not help .

I can hear a mechanical actuation of some sort when switching from AF to MF (and back). It sounds like a small solenoid. Although it has been years since I used the (previously) trusty A700, the sound is familiar.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!... Brian

Is it just the SAL1870 or all screw drive lenses? I would suggest a "Reset default" with the front AF selector switch on the front set to A.

Thanks, Lee. I have assumed that the lens is OK since it works on my A77. I was hopeful that your suggestion might work as it was something that I had not tried... alas, it did not solve the problem.

Cheers... Brian

Too bad. You say you can hear it switching from MF to AF? With the lens off, power on and the selector set to MF turn the screw, then set to any AF and see if the screw locks.
If it locks you're probably looking at a fuse for that high torque motor. I've never had the problem.

If you are thinking about having it repaired, I have had excellent service from the folks at United Camera Repair. You may wish to give them a call or send them an email regarding the issue. Either that, of consider it time to upgrade to all SSM lenses.

Lee, The screw rotates freely in MF and locks when switched to AF.

Basil, I may shoot United Camera Repair an email to see if they have any suggestions. I moved to E-mount in 2015 and my son uses my A77 with two SSM A-mount lenses (SAL70300G and CZ1680). I was actually trying to sell the A700, but didn't want to sell it for parts.

Thank you both for your help. ... Brian
