Nice discussion.

Here my opinion and I haven't decided yet what works right for me.

I started the E-mount with a A7Ri, the 36MP camera. I liked it, however it was too small for my hands, even with a battery grip.
Than I purchased a A7Rii which I liked very well. Started with soms 12k shuttercount, ended with some 18k.
Nevertheless, I changed it for a brandnew A7iii, which is for me a very good camera. Feeling fine in my hand, nice IBIS, eye-AF that I understand to use.

But, it is itching: adding another A7Rii for the pixels and the crop mode, or changing for the newer but more expensive A7Riii. The A7Riv is too much for me, but the 42MP felt very nice.

But, rationally: do I need the extra 18MP? No, but I fear I'm suffering from a little GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome).

In the end I'm looking around for a secondhand A7Rii as a spare, just for tele-use.

It seems unlikely that these will drop from their current pricing for quite some time. I expect the opposite-- that pricing will rise. The A7R2 is back up to $1800 in the US. That was partly why I decided to buy it. I had an offer below the last sale price.

I've been seeing a fair few sub 10k A7 II and A7 R II
... could be video rigs or 2nd bodies
