Faster read-out makes the camera more expensive. The A7r4 is about US$1000,- more expensive then the A7 IV. It is not weird it isn't faster. You want faster read-out? Get the A9 II.

I assume anyone with an R-series a7 doesn't care much about video.
The readout speed definitely matters for stills. I mostly use the electronic shutter and would appreciate a faster electronic shutter. It seems weird that the electronic shutter on the A7IV is no faster than one in the A7RIV. The A7IV supposedly has a faster processor and about the half the pixels. Ok,it would not bother me at all if this camera had no video function, so I'm personally not bothered by slow readout etc. I did watch Gerald's review and as I recall he basically said you'd have to buy the A1 or A7sIII to do better, but I had a hard time paying attention to the details because my eyes tend to glaze over when I hear video speak!
![]() I asked the question here on Dyxum ,who actually uses their cameras for video? My guess is, that it is only a small percentage. So I have a hard time understanding all the fuss and complaints about the video performance on this series of cameras! |

Gerald Undone agrees with you on the 24mp but adds that it is the best hybrid camera for the money. If you want a video centric camera get the A7s3.

The A7IV is not even that good for video capture. It reads out too slow and the odd downsampling can't be that good either. They should stuck with 24 MP and faster read speed if video was the focus.

So, the A7IV is released and it seems to me that a lot of effort has gone into the video capacities of the camera. I'd rather they had saved money by not doing that and make it a stills photography camera only and sell in for a lower price!
![]() But it does seem like it will be an excellent camera and I understand the emphasis on video features -- its what a lot of buyers want. The pluses are the bump in senor resolution, and EVF resolution, improved AF performance, the newer menus, the improved body ergonomics, better AF on button, and joystick, and more. I think they improved the focus point color from grey only, which was a negative on the A7III. It is said to be compatible with the LA-EA5, but I haven't seen that in writing yet. The shutter is set closed -- a good thing for avoiding sensor dust when changing lenses. As I've already mentioned, I'm not a fan of the flippy screen, but can live with it. I think the new exposure comp dial might be trouble for me and others. As far as I know it still has no built in GPS. Well, I don't need a new camera yet, so I won't preorder, but I will buy it down the road if I do need something new. I might skip this generation and go for version V! ![]() ![]() Regards, Kelly |

Exactly. Shooting from the hip or the calves for that matter, it is an absolute advantage. In addition, try taking video while sitting in a fast boat without some screen flexibility. Impossible. It's fun and the results are meaningful. Also, all the best to owen01. JT |

I've used everything from a simple tilt to articulated to flip, and they all have their advantages. If you start to feel too limited with any of these, consider the gold standard of Pre Cambrian Age photo tech - the angle finder

I suspect I would agree with that statement if I'd tried any other camera without this facility. It is a great piece of engineering and, for a change, doesn't seem to be a weak spot of the camera! best regards, Neil. |

Hi Kelly, Video? What's that.....? ![]() I can count on the fingers of one hand the times I have used the a99 for a video - and all based on a need for work to have a record of a workshop type activity. I suspect I'd get 'into' video quite quickly if it were motor racing etc., but catch fencing and barriers are so prolific now I'd rather leave that type of video to those guys perched on top of the gantry's round the track! Anyway, far too many things to photograph with a stills camera I think? Hope the knees improve - it's lower back issues for me I'm afraid! Take care and stay safe young man! Best wishes, Neil. |

If the reach isn't important and I don't need to squeeze out all the sound quality I can, I use an Azden SX-30. It's a combination shotgun/twin capsule stereo microphone. But it connects via the 3.5mm microphone port, not XLR, and of course records in camera in compressed audio formats. I mean it sounds much, much better than the camera's microphones, so is good enough for a lot of purposes.
Yeah, that makes sense for your shooting style. I guess there is no single design that is best for all users. |

The articulating screen on the a99 is the gold standard for me. Anything less is a disappointment.

@Wētāpunga: ah, the recording part is just as important or more important then the video. Yes, then it makes sense.
I started to use the screen more a couple of years ago with smaller lenses and street-like photography. In that situation an articulating flip out screen is cumbersome. If I want to make a picture from a lower point of view, I need to flip out the screen, turn it around and up - in stead of simply pull it. |
