Thanks for the comments, compared to some other parts of Newfoundland the Avalon Peninsula where we spent the first days seems the least touristic and we were early in the season, so indeed very quiet. I guess that if the full eclipse passes through there in 2024 it will be more busy, but on the other hand the place is so big that I can hardly imagine it getting very crowded. Maybe St John's, but not the countryside.

At the end of the afternoon we arrived in Trepassey, a sleepy fishing village on the south side of the "eastern lob" of the Avalon peninsula.

1: Actually the harbour is just a sinle pier

2: With a few moored fishing boats

3: And a slightly bigger one on the other side

4: The fishing nets for the next trip are standing ready

5: One of the many seagulls is keeping a close watch if there isn't something to eat for him there

6: Several houses there look quite "run down"

7: The local church looks in better shape, allthough I would call the architecture a bit a-typical for a house of worship

#5: A7Rii + Tamron FE 150-500 Di III VC VXD

Thanks for the pictures. It seems quiet over there - and beautiful. The total eclipse of 2024 should pass through this area - maybe the place to go then?

Indeed the end of the world and yes Ine, that was our rental car. We stayed in all kind of guesthouses and B&B's, coffee was US quality (I think you know what that means ) but the beers were OK, they even have a kind locally brewed with molten iceberg water . We were booked on an iceberg and whalewatching boating tour later but that got cancelled due to high winds. Looking at the whitecaps on the sea that day we were really happy it was cancelled

Here's really one end of the world: Cape Race

1: A village hidden around the corner

2: The lighthouse

3: Mini fjord

4: Rusty anchor, probably from one of the many ships that sank on the rocky coast of the island

5: The bay at Cape Race

the end of the world indeed! it seems? TYSM for taking us along, Pieter!
hope you'll share some stories as well? a remote, abandoned place?
or one with a town hidden around the corner?
where did you stay? can I buy coffee there? (crucial! ;)) or a beer?
is that 'your' car? did you say WHALE WATCHING...
(not curious of course ).

It looks very, very quiet there. I like the slanted rocks, especially in #7. TFS Pieter

Nice series from "The end of the World", Pieter. One very good thing, I have noticed is lack of crazy crowds what makes photographer happy.

After the first day in Saint John's (and Cape Spear) the next day was our first travel day along road #10 "The Irish Loop" to Trepassey.

1: The first place we stopped was a "sleepy" harbour of Bay Bulls, just a few fishing and whalewatching boats.

2: But to boost the economy there was a quay for offshore support vessels on the other side of the bay

3: Yellow rope on a red boulder

4: Witless Bay, an ecological reserve with reportedly lots of birds, but they all kept hiding for us

A little before Trepassey we took a detour off road 10 towards Mistaken Point ecological reserve and the lighthouse of Cape Race.

5: Not the busiest road, nice asphalt but a few km further it changed to gravel

You will probably recognise the road where we met the foxes

6: Again no birds to be seen at Mistaken Point, but we did stop to admire the rugged slanted rock slab formations

7: More slanted rock slabs

Cape Race and Trepassey will be shown in a later post after I've had time for more PP.
TFL and comments always welcome.
