Tonight while shooting with my A77ii I lost the image in the EVF.  The rear screen works fine but there is no image in the viewfinder.  It looks like the backlight is lit, but that's it.  I tried the finder/monitor button and checked my settings to see if anything changed, but it didn't look like it had.  Just to make sure I even tried a factory reset.

Is my EVF dead or am I missing something?

I had the same problem on a different model. I cleaned the eye sensor right next to the viewfinder and all was well. Hope this works.

I just gave that a try and it didn't help. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Try switching the Finder/Monitor setting - cog tab 4 / second down from "auto" to "manual" using the tilting screen. Close the screen completely with it turned in to the body. Then try the Finder/Monitor button to the left of the top LCD while looking in the EVF.

No luck. Also, when I turn the screen back around the monitor/finder button will turn the screen off, but the EVF will not come on.

I do not know why Lee told you to turn the screen inward Doesn't make a difference.

Okay, it seems to me there are two options: there is something wrong with the EVF screen or the eye sensor. One test to rule out the eye sensor.

Go back into the menu cog setting. Turn "Eye Start AF" to on. Make sure the Finder/Monitor setting is set to finder. If you go to the viewfinder, the camera should focus. If it does, the eye sensor is fine. If it doesn't, it might be the eye sensor.

Edit: just remembered Lee also uses Olympus and I guess that works like the Canon cameras I own, where you need to turn the screen inwards to use the EVF.

It looks like the sensor is bad. When I bring it up to my eye I don't get anything. I tried cleaning it but that didn't help either. Thanks for the advice.

Is there a workaround? I'm not a fan of shooting off of the rear screen.
