and thus hopefully solving the problem for a relatively low price.
Well, the adapters he suggested take micro SD cards, not the standard SD cards that the A77 uses, so the cost for those need to be added as well. And since I offered to send a spare MS Pro Duo to him before amrep's post I can't see that trying a MS Pro Duo card is more expensive than buying an adapter + a micro SD.

The adapters are micro SD to MS and use only the MS pins - of course!

I saw that later but my question is still "why an adapter", I don't see much difference with the earlier suggestion to use a straight MS pro duo. My reaction was more to what you said here: "Hesitating buying a cheap MS adapter, but willing to shell out $$$ to Precision? - This doesn't add up to me."
The OP never said he hesitated or didn't want to buy an MS card or adapter, he only said he didn't have one and there is no certainty that an MS card (or micro SD + MS adapter) would solve his problem. It's worth a test but no more than that I think.

Probably KEH will try to repair it.

I think buying an (MS to SD?) adapter makes no sense, the A77 takes MS Pro Duo cards directly. The SD adapter would use the same contacts as an SD card and the OP already showed these don't work with an SD card so it's extremely unlikely they work with an adapter. When you stick in an MS card the A77 the contacts are on the other side. This is needed because the contacts on an MS Pro Duo are closer together vs. an SD card and an MS Pro Duo has 10 while a normal SD card has 9. I know it's a long shot but it's possible that the problem lies in the SD card slot contacts but that the MS slot contacts are still OK.

By the way, did the message just appear from one day to the next With the card in? After extended storage with card in or out? After a card change?

It may be a long shot, but if it's just one of the SD card contacts that's broken getting an MS card might still be working, since these contacts are on the other side. I don't know if these cards are still for sale or if you can find one 2nd hand. I have one I can send you by mail but it might take some time from Belgium to reach you. Send me a PM if you want to explore that option.

I had previously used a contact cleaner but it did not help.

A few thoughts and notes:
My Nexxtech Contact and Head Cleaner (isopropanol, isobutane and propane) has served me well getting past the seals on my A99II multi-selector joystick and fly wheels on my various models and brands. Sprayed with an application tube in a quantity to be useful it is liquid, requires agitation (movement) of the contact being cleaned, and dries with evaporation.
The silica gel in the battery compartment serves to make sure the battery is removed and facilitates evaporation. This was the method used to "fix" my Memory Stick slot on my A700.

I would try Precision Camera Repair. I was completely satisfied with them in the past.

This is strange. I don't know of any independent repair place. Everything else works on the camera as far as I know.

It could be several things including a broken cable or something similar.

You could find an independent repairer that is willing to look inside.
I noticed A-mount cameras are not that cheap in the states. KEH.com has a BGN rated A77m2 for $583,25 - that might be an option.
