Hi,

I have not done a lot of video recording with the a99ii but had to do some today. My batteries (vertical grip, genuine Sony FM-500H batteries) were at 56% and 98%.

I started recording and the 56% battery went to 0 and the 98% battery took over BUT within 4 minutes the camera went dark and would not respond.

I waited about 10 minutes and turned the camera on again and both batteries showed charge- 56% was at 35% and the 98% was at 75%. The camera responded again but i only took pictures, no video.

Anyone have any idea why the camera shut off with battery charge still in the batteries?Camera did not feel hot.

Any help is appreciated.

Original Sony grip or third party?
Did you try without the grip?

Thanks.

It is a Sony grip and I was in the middle of filming so no, I did not remove the battery and grip and try that.

It just really threw me for a loop.

I understand. Trying filming without the grip eliminates a potential point of failure.

How long was it since you had last used the camera?

It has been quite a while.
I put i new batteries so they were fresh.

I'll try without the grip but when the batteries showed up again, i took a lot of pictures without any problems.

Thanks for the help

Sounds like overheating...
What was the ambient temperature when you used the camera? What kind of memory cards inserted?

And are you really sure it just didn't overheat? Actually the temperature inside the camera might be higher, especially that of the image sensor.
Or the capacity of the "old" batteries especially when filming isn't good enough any more. The capacity under load will decrease faster to reach shutdown voltage then what is displayed when camera is just switched on (in idle mode).

Thanks.

To be honest that is what i think given the suddenness of it just shutting down and then coming back with the batteries showing charge.

The question is how I know if it is going to overheat? The camera did not feel hot and the room as my guess in the low 70s so not really too hot.

Thanks again and I will try again just to see what happens.

Thanks everyone for all your help.
This is why i love Dyxum so much.
