    Posted: 04 November 2024 at 12:51
Hi all Dyxumers:
As new happy owner of "new" used A7R4 camera I am struggling with some focusing related problems.
I have focus set to AF "Wide" and have all icons in Focus Area Limit checked. But when I want to focus on a subject a multiple green squares are kind of flying on a screen focusing mostly not what I would like to set focus on. I am getting crazy and already few times I had to switch to MF to get focused on desired subject.
Also have another problem: when I want to review picture just taken I have message: unable to access (or something like this) message. Reviewing picture feature is possible after re-inserting SD card.
Am I missing something? or What am I doing wrong?
Any help will be very appreciated.
Jack

The first thing I do when I buy a camera that has been previously used is to reset the camera to factory setting and go from there.

Formatting the memory card might help.
Maybe your card is to slow: reading before writing is ready/done may cause this error message.

AF wide mode = Do you feel lucky mode !

The little green squares lighting up are the spots it's focussing on within the "wide " focus area .
If your taking a picture of a large object or scene then this can work .

It sounds like your trying to focus on something relatively small that's within the relatively large box .

What exactly are you photographing when you have this problem with AF locking on to what you actually want ?

I have an a7Riv, and I use different focus areas and modes , with and with tracking etc for different scenarios.
Knowing what your doing would enable us to give best advice for that scenario.

But either way , wide focus area isn't one I ever use .

if the led is still lit up after taking a photo and than click the review button this massage will pop up. just wait till the led turns off. (it then shouldn't come up with this massage)

Thank you all for your response. I think, I resolved focus problem.
Phase detection area feature was off. I turned it on and so far everything looks ok.
Uncle Sam: yes, camera was reset to fabric settings.
Harm: writing speed can be a problem. I am temporarily using Samsung SD XC I card. Two new SD XC II cards are already on their way.
Neilt3: see first part of this post.
japp: I never review my pictures when red writing indicator lights on.
Anyway. Thank you all for your help.

Incidentally, and if it may help -- since I do not use the AF-On button for anything (I do not use "back button focus"), I programmed the AF-On button to cycle through the available AF areas, including (when AF-C is on) the tracking area settings. I mostly use Expand Spot Focus but sometimes I will use one of the wider areas in combination with eye-detect AF or facial-recognition. I just press AF-On to cycle through the options until I get the one I want for the scene I am photographing. Also, I programmed one of the top Custom buttons to be an AF/MF switch (easier to reach or find in the dark, than searching for the switch on the lens). Then in my Fn menu I have also some of the focus-related settings (like switching between human and animal eye-detect AF).

Taming the AF was, for me, the biggest challenge when switching from the A900 to the A7R IV. I think I'm fairly comfortable with it, now.
