I have opportunity to take one or a pair of 7D bodies

Both have been sleeping for a few years, batteries took full charge in 3.5 hours, should be ok for power

I have no experience with any Minolta or Sony digital body
Looking at the 7D here, I see FFB issues which I’ll look for before deciding to buy (or not)

Please advise me on a proper pre-purchase test for this specific camera
Is there a best-way to see if these 7D bodies are suffering FFB?
Will I need a card reader and laptop with me while I test these before purchase?

Is there a list of things (updates, protocols, etc) that these bodies need before returning to daily service?

Thanks

Put the battery in , take a picture .
If the first frame is black ( or chronically underexposed) the camera has FFB .
If the picture on the rear LCD is correctly exposed , then it doesn't have FFB.
But no guarantee that it won't develop it .
Check AF works fine , check all the buttons and dials work ok , flash etc .
Make sure that image stabilisation ( Anti Shake ) works .

For testing the camera works , no PC is needed .

To review an image a card needs to be in it .

There was a firmware update to FW 1.10 available.

If you need, i could provide copies of those files and instructions provided you give me your e-mail address through MP.

There are two

I’ll look at both

Current market - is $100usd reasonable for a running 7D?

If it's in good condition and full working order , $100 seems fair to me .

Probably do a search on eBay for sold listings , but how many are in the right condition to compare, I don't know .

Good working ones are few and far between now .

I decided to wing it and took the pair

I’ll know more about them later once I get into them
One appeared to show FFB, but we’ll see how it behaves going forward

My hands on them was the first use they’ve seen in years

Should be fun

Learning

That wasn’t a FFB issue

Bracketing selector was on Single Frame Advance, was showing thumbnail only

In the sunshine outdoors, glare etc, it appeared as if nothing was showing up on the LCD

This 7D might just be fine after all

Not so bad
:-)

I am enjoying them so far - getting started on the learning curve

I see there is a common issue of underexposure

I have not yet looked at raw or post processing etc, but my first impression is that this camera tends to underexpose

Is that judged by looking at the LCD review image , the histogram on on the PC screen .

If it's by the LCD , by today's standard it's dull as dishwater and should be ignored .

The histogram is helpful .

I don't have problems with my images as per the cameras exposure , but you do need to get the hang of how the camera meters the image .

Edit ; just to add , with these older cameras including my Sony a100 that I used daily together with the Minolta , I frequently zoomed into a mid tone to meter from in difficult light , then pressed and held the AEL button .
Zoom back out , focus and compose , whilst still holding the AEL button , and then take the shot .

The meterings much better in newer cameras , but you soon get the hang of how the camera behaves.

I’ve been using an Eos 1D (ccd) since it was the new thing
Also use Eos 6D - and Pentax ist-D
These seem to meter similarly

Many film cameras as well - but yes I need to hammer away at this shutter button and see how it works in different lighting conditions

I’ll be out today with an old Leica iiif and 4x5 sheet film in a different rig
Will take the 7D out in daylight to see how the world looks in the Mind of Minolta

From the DpReview 2005 Minolta Maxxum 7D review: "Tendency for metering system to under-expose, needs a little positive compensation"
