Topic: Where next in the SF / Bay Area? Posted: 20 May 2007 at 09:49 |
Even if you are by nature a solitary photographer, you are likely to get a real buzz out of meeting up with other Dyxum members to take photographs. It is fascinating to see how others tackle photographic subjects and great to actually meet the people you have been conversing with on-line.
This topic is for discussion of possible meetings anywhere in The SF/bay area. Dyxum members are invited to suggest meetings and make preliminary plans in this thread. Once you have settled on a venue and date/dates, PM me or any other admin/moderator about having a specific planned event thread set up (this makes your event more visible to other members!). Keep an eye on regions that are near where you live and, if you are visiting somewhere that has a group, why not drop them a line in their regional thread? An index of all the regional threads, planned meetings and resulting photographs can be found here - Bob Janes Suggested by Steve-S: Possible specific venues -- SF Zoo, SF itself, Wine Country, Beaches, Sailboats (and other Bay topics), Marin Headlands/GGBridge, Redwoods, Palace of the Legion of Honor... Egads, there's too many to even BEGIN to list a reasonable proportion. Local folks can doubtless add gazillions more. Guests from afar obviously welcome! Edited by Bob Janes - 23 July 2007 at 12:57 |

As I suggested it, I'll put my .02 in. I'm in the north bay (Sonoma County), so a "wine country" or other northerly venue would be preferable to me. Lots of wonderful old weathered barns & the like, in west-county areas (Sonoma & Marin both). But for a Dyxum meet, of course, I'd surely go further afield if I had to! - Steve S. |

I live in San Francisco, near Ocean Beach, and I would be glad to meet up. I'm going to be out of town for most of July though.
I can think of two good ways to explore San Francisco. The first is the walking tours (they're free). Here is the schedule for this summer. Click on the name of the tour for a description. There's also the historic 49 Mile Scenic Drive (I've never done the whole thing, and I don't think I know anyone who has). |

wyip, Personally, I often end up more frustrated than anything else if I go on a walking-tour planning on more than "tourist snapshots." I end up wanting half an hour to do studies of a cornice from multiple directions/angles, or what-have-you, when the tour has scheduled the stop for 5ish minutes... :-P Still, it might be an interesting first hour of a Dyxum meet, to give us an overview of an area that those not familiar with the area can use to find interesting subjects, vantages, etc...? I confess, I haven't been on any "S.F. City Guides" tours, so they may be better for Dyxum-meet purposes than I had thought. As for the 49-mile-drive, I think picking *ONE* feature and doing a meet/shoot there (Japanese Tea Garden, Coit Tower, Sutro Baths, Fort Point... etc) would work extremely well. - Steve S. |

I'd still like to do this, but I'm a bit swamped at the moment. I'm in what I hope are the final stages of a real estate deal, looking to move soon. I'll probably come up for air just in time for Spring.

I'd be willing ... Live in Milpitas, and not afraid of a little drive.
I'm in Thailand until the beginning of Feb, so it'd have to be a bit after that. Maybe a format of: ...meet up at a place of interest ...wander around based on interest ...meet back up and share some images afterwards Like Steve suggests earlier in the thread, I tend to focus in on something and spend a lot of time looking at it ... and then might spend zero time on something others are taking a keen interest in. Oh ... and I've been interested in finding an old 'spooky looking' cemetery ... if anybody knows of one I'd be 110% on board. |

One of the guys at work wanted to go to this cemetery in Oakland over the Christmas break, though I didn't have the time to go. Established 1863, it's on a hill with potential for SF as a background for some shots.

I've always wondered where all the Dyxum members were here in Bay Area and why we don't meet like other areas (I assumed that everyone just has a busy schedule ... I do with work and family and 2 small kids). + 1 would like to meet up ... maybe in Spring? I've been to that Cemetery about 10+ years ago ... very nicely maintained and not spooky at all. It's almost park like because it's so well maintained. It's close to Fenton's Ice cream over in Oakland/Piedmont area (if my memory is correct). |
