Thanks for the kind comments! These assignments are fun and definitely feel my photography is improving. I haven't got any ideas for 'High Key' yet, so I will do more thinking/reading/research before I attempt that one!

Ha, Ha, a worthy pass I would say. Your 'getting closer' shot is so much more interesting than the 50 mm 'safe' shot so a clear example how the assignments create more interesting perspectives.

Looking forward to more of your assignment contributions.

Phil - I like this a lot. Not only do you get closer as per the assignment, but you also create a new and interesting look of a everyday (well, at least fairly commonplace) item.

Well done (both the photo and the bird).

Novel idea Phil, and definitely worthy of a pass.

Now you can stop sticking your head in the oven.

Here's my first attempt. Cooking goose for xmas dinner. I would normally take these kind of photos with a 50mm at a safe distance. So I decided to take with my widest lens (17mm on full frame) at MFD (manual focus), so the front element was a couple of inches away from the goose bone. The heat from the fan oven was blowing in my face, felt like I was in a sauna. Not sure if it was great for my camera/lens to be inside the oven, but it was only for a few seconds and hey it's a cheap lens :)

By the way, here's the safe 50mm for comparison (before I thought of getting closer).

Cheers
Phil

Pegelli, once again thank you for your comments. I had a very tough time getting people pictures in the light available. I like the interaction between mother & daughter too and am happy with this photo - and happy to have passed!

ooops. I meant to post this in the "Fill the Frame" contest. LOL

Pegelli: I wish I could have taken the time to set the shot up porpperly. However, he really wasn't cooperating. Imagine that! It was taken with a 400 prime, so zooming out wasn't an option. I was able to snap off two quick shots before he turned and walked away.

@ JS: your first one is a pass and I really like it allthough a bit more dof would have helped (but you can't have everything in such circumstances). I like the connection and concentration of the two ladies (mother and daughter?) and you captured that well. I don't like the second one, too unsharp overall and no connection with the person or what he's doing.

@Basil: what brettania said, unless this assignment was the first thing that came to your mind when this beast started heading for your lunch. Nice shot btw, allthough cropped a bit too tight at the bottom

Basil
I hate to remind you, but the overall rules say you must shoot specifically with each assignment in mind and not use a previously posted shot. (See.)

It certainly rates as too close to be comfortable, but rulez is rulez.

I have shown this one before, but it fits the paramters. This was MUCH closer than I wanted to come to the subject...but he walked right up to me after first checking out my wife and her lunch.

Well, I finally got out with my camera and tried to satisfy the rules for this assignment. I went to the Monterey Aquarium and attempted to take closeup photos again. It was incredibly crowded (and dark). I managed to take many photos, unfortunately most were too blurry or whatever, but I managed these two results, I hope at least one will meet the requirements:

Thanks for looking (again),
JS

kubuthor, I like the picture a lot better, good eye contact and nice colors for the low-light situation.

It's still not really "close", but from your story I gather much closer than you would normally take pictures, so you met the spirit of the assignment and I will let you pass.

You've probably seen we're going to overhaul the assignments and I suggest as you build experience you come back to getting closer after completing some other assignments to get more comfortable to get into people's face a bit more.

Thank you for your words! I must agree - when looking at the photo at home, I was quite sad, but as an attempt, it really has its price for me.
Now, after some more days of trying, this is my second one. It is from Christmas markets in Brno - I talked with this boy for a while, then he invited me inside his stall to look it up and after it I asked him if I should make a photo - so just one and then I said him goodbye...
When walking in the city, I usually got only 50/1,7 with myself, so as with this one - maybe not so wide as before, but in terms of human relations it was really a lot of closeness for me...
So, do you like it?

And thanks for these assignments! It is a fantastic idea that can make people think more about their photography and help them to move further in it...
