Sidenote: a disproportionate percentage of this group you speak of likely own a ni*on d3 due to the rate of machinegun fire.

Granted some of those will also be more obsessed with megapixels, and so will be interested in the a900.

I don't have much experience with cards...but my understanding was that the smaller cards are usually much faster than the bigger ones? Is the general setup to have one small one to act as a buffer of sorts for a big fella?

Which mussel do you mean....? *

I don't really get fuzz about "external storage", unless you're hiking and mains/power is an issue for day's.

A laptop is indeed sometimes to big/overkill to take along.
* a 500 mb 3.5" USB disk is 80-100 euro - aka dead cheap, if you want you can get a 250Gb (or more) 2.5 usb disk for same price.
* got myself a N800 for 250 usd (or any other "handlheld pc" form factor thing) and a USB to go dongle (12 cad) with a powerd usb hub.

Hook the camera as "usb mass device" to the hub together with the disk and happy copy'ing (or use CF reader)...
If you want to cut down the amount of power adapters then you might need to solder a few thing together (N800+usb hub can be easily "feeded" at same time from a 3.5 usb power supply), but hardly rocket science.

If you get somewhere internet, tar/zip the stuff in chunks and ftp the day away while you're sleeping...
Or use a second usb disk as double backup...
With a bit of fiddeling you can run the whole thing of 12v in a car.

* Might be good to incorporate gps coordinates inside a 24mpix shot

I have been actually shooting more frequently with my A700 than I did with my A100, but I do take more time to compose and get more keepers. The A100 was my first DSLR, so there was a lot of the 'shoot everything, sort later' approach.

I have 2 Lexar 4GB UMDA CF cards that I use with the A700 and they work great.

taking the a700 sensor pixel density and filling the full frame would result in an 28.9mp sensor. if you had a "RAW aps-c crop" directly in the camera that you could use in tele situations thus reducing file size when you would crop anyway in the end. that would be nice. on the other hand i guess you would like all them 28 millions of pixels work all the time when you have payed for them....
