I'm going on vacation next week and plan to bring 1 film camera in addition to the a700 gear. I'm planning to shoot one of my remaining rolls of kodak HIE B+W Infrared film. My question is: will the motorized advance in the 9xi fog infrared?

I've never used the HIE in this body and would like to avoid unpleasant surprises. I have plenty of other options if someone knows that it will cause a problem.

According to M Hohner's website the 9xi is IR safe. Look here.

Thanks for the quick reply. Also, great sight that I was unaware existed. This one will stay bookmarked.

As already answered, there won't be problems, since the Dynax 9xi uses an electromechanical film advance sensor, not an IR-LED. However, you may need to stick some adhesive tape on the pressure plate in order to cover the little grooves in there. Otherwise, they may become visible on the film.

Also, there was a special IR-safe pressure plate (2081-0814-01) available for the Dynax 9xi from Minolta Service, but they ran out of supply more than ten years ago.

Hmmm...

I have 1" wide black gaffer tape. It's certainly opaque and the right size, but what about thickness and changing the focus point of the film plane? Considering there is already the issue of focus with infrared, what will this add to the calculation. Suppose stopping down to F16 makes the most sense, unless some else has tried this.

I'm not sure if gaffer tape won't be a bit too adhesive, if you want to remove it afterwards... I can recommend thin self-adhesive foils to cover books, for example "d-c-fix" (Konrad Hornschuch AG, 74679 Weißbach, Germany).

In regard to the focus point, you do not need to worry, as it won't change, if you insert something between the backside of the film and the pressure plate, as the film will remain in exactly the same position as before.

Greetings,

Matthias

The gaffer tape that I have (3M) leaves little or no residue behind. I mostly use it for taping gels to hot lights (its intended purpose) as it withstands heat and won't leave your lights looking gross after taking the tape off.
Still, I may try a piece first on an old 3xi that does not AF anymore to try it out before sticking it to my 9xi.

You are, of course, correct regarding the film plane. Had I thought about it longer, I'd have come to same conclusion. Thanks for steering me in that direction.
