Excellent photo, well deserved

You can do great things with ISO1600, a fast lens AND SSS

You put them all to use here very effectively. Congrats.

Thanks all - I'm very pleased :) Just spent 10 mins hitting refresh on the front page so I can see it up there! Suits the site colour scheme well if I say so myself :P

A few notes about the shot - Xiao Xiao is her name (pronounce an X like a Shhhh sound - Shiao Shiao) and she's Chinese. She was my girlfriend during my second trip to China - during my first trip she was my student! This shot was taken in our rented flat on one of our last nights together in Beijing before I flew back home to start university - if you look through my galleries you'll find a lot of her in there. Hopefully you can get an idea of what she was feeling with me heading off.

The shot is pretty heavily PPed - we had a real session with the camera and I took a lot of pictures - initially this got overlooked for more obviously striking shots. In colour and the original crop it's odd - nice light but nothing really striking. However a small crop to focus attention to the eyes and a blue-toned B&W really brought it out and it's now my favourite shot - it's great to see it get to the front page of Dyxum :)

I'm currently in Mongolia on my way back to China for a year's study there - I should have arrived for the Olympics but my visa application was refused - so hopefully I'll be able to tell her personally that she's (a little bit) famous. Unfortunately she'll be heading over to study in England in mid-september, so no repeat of before, but we'll keep in touch :)

Finally also congrats to the other finalists :)

Terrific shots, all of these! I am new here and enjoying the company of other Minolta and/or Sony DSLR users. I have a question for you...Regarding "You can do great things with ISO1600, a fast lens AND SSS " what is SSS? Super steady shot?

Yes, SSS = Super Steady Shot. Check out this link: The Dyxum Photographic Abbreviations List for clues to other abreviations.

Welcome to Dyxum, Kimberley. Time to start posting some of your own!
