Correction my Plover turns out to be the endangered Snowy Plover and not the Piping (who's numbers are declining also).

These threads are always so interesting that I forget to note how many pages they have run to.

Could the next person with a new shot to post please start "Show us some bird shots...17" (without the quotes of course).

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing, as simply messing about in boats

On a warmer sunny Sunday Morning the wife and I took a drive across the Sunshine Skyway to the beaches along Bradenton Bay and Sarasota.
Blue sky without a cloud in the sky but a heavy morning mist shrouded the bridge.

We pulled into the rest stop at the base of the bridge and there we found American White Pelicans swimming in the misty bay.

American Pelicans are a winter visitor south of the bay but Brown Pelicans are year round on both sides of the bay.

On the beaches of Long Boat Key we found Laughing Gulls and Ring Billed Gulls

Among the Royal and Fosters Terns we found Sandwich Terns

Higher up on the beach were a group of Sanderlings taking a nap.

At the very top edge of the beach I saw a bird moving and I moved up to investigate and almost stepped on the Snowy Plover who stayed still for a photo.

After all the photo taking a hearty meal at St Armands Circle on Siesta Key and the long drive home.

Here are a few of mine from today. They could be much much sharper as the shutter speed is way too low for the focal length (Sigma 100-300/4 with a Sigma 1.4x TC multiplication factor not shown in the exif as the Sigma TC is not chipped). The SSS of course helps somewhat and the IQ of the A900 is kind of forgiving allowing plenty of sharpening in PP but I have to pay more attention to shutter speeds next outing. I also don't know why they are at iso 160, I thought I set it at 100 or 200 (my mistake obviously) not that it makes a big difference... Also they are all cropped, some more (the sparrow) some less (the eagle).

1/60s f/6.3 at 300.0mm iso160

1/80s f/8.0 at 300.0mm iso160

1/80s f/6.3 at 300.0mm iso160

1/100s f/8.0 at 210.0mm iso800

Thanks... Brian

I just used the 300/4. When speed is of the essence, the 1.4x TC just slows things down too much. Fwiw, I checked the exif data (with Opera) and it's still there...shots were at 1/1500 second.

The location was the Wingspan Trust near Rotorua. They rehabiliate injured birds and the old falconry techniques (using lures) works well to develop the bird's hunting skills. This bird has jessies on its legs- which habituate it to a bit of handling.

So, the Trust is a lot easier than trying to find these birds in the wild. . They're rarer than the NZ kiwi (but at leats, not nocturnal...).
