Not a Fisher, but my parents had a Colvic 33 which is vaguely similar.
Thanks for the link to photography online, they're brilliant! I quite like being taught in a Scottish accent. |

Welcome from me aswell Sam. What sort of boat? (I hope you are going to say a Fisher 37, my absolute favourite in a lifetime of sailing ![]() Of course there are a squillian YouTubes tutorials and a whole library of books to choose from but I'd suggest you have a look at the YouTube channel, "Photography Online". It started in Jan 20 and publishes an hour programme every month, entirely free, no catch. And I have no connection with them other than an impressed viewer. I'd start at Jan 20 and work through last year, there is a host of good advice covering all sorts of photography genres. It is as good as any TV programme and is from a Photography training school on the Isle of Skye. Looking forward to seeing your sailing photos in due course. Brian |

Welcome Sam ! Your entrance was very similar to mine (after lurking for a while), and most of my gear is from the second hand market too
![]() Looking forward to your work, and I hope you enjoy it here as much as I do. |

Guests are always welcome (outside of Covid). I have the very lovely Tokina 11-16 which I bought specifically for sailing photos - the field of view should make for some really interesting photos.
Aside from playing, I'm interested to read about getting better at taking photos - any good reading recommended? |

Well I quite often get to visit Southampton, so maybe when the light is better and the lockdown is a little less tight...

Hi Neil, I live on my boat in sunny Southampton, so in easy reach of most of 'the south'! |

Welcome to Dyxum Sam!
Both the cameras you mention there post-date my exit from the A-mount. Until this week my only real Sony camera was the very first a100 (a refreshed KM5D really). I can remember how clean the files were. I exited to Nikon back then. If I had the spare funds today I would grab an old 2008-era set of small primes in the 20-50mm zone and a Nikon dSLR - maybe one day. I like to mix/match systems. Looking forward to trying my A7II whenever going outside is a thing again. Totally appreciate your comments on taking on used gear, fabulous way to explore. I think some people in here have more gear than most used camera stores! |

Welcome Sam, and great to hear how you got here.
No doubt you'll enjoy the gear you've acquired, but beware lens lust and other GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) attacks.... If you're dedicated to a-mount, there's plenty of well priced and excellent gear to be found. Looking forward to seeing your images posted here. |

Welcome indeed, Sam, and good to see you making an ecological choice for the A77 as well! I suspect you will not be disappointed at that decision. You also joined as a consequence of the Lens Reviews - same here all those years ago.
Are you 'prepared' to indicate a narrowing of location as well? The 'South' could be anywhere from Cornwall to Kent (ie where I am)? It's always good to have a rough location should there be any Dyxum meets in the distant future (held to whatever social distancing rules and regs. may be in place by then of course!). Take care and good to have you along! Best regards, Neil. |

Hi everyone,
As a long time lurker I've finally registered as a user - and wanted to say a massive thank you: the knowledge on this site is spectacular. The extensive lens reviews have been enormously helpful in enabling me to spend my money wisely, so thank you. I've shot with an A350 since '08, but the lack of internal GPS was a pain on my travels and I'd reverted to mostly using my Lumix point & shoot. I thought briefly about switching to Nikon ![]() I love secondhand tech; reasonably priced, eco friendly, tried and tested - what's not to love. For sentimental reasons I'll be keeping my 350, but can't wait to get stuck in to shooting with me new A77. Thanks everyone, Sam ![]() |

Roger Rex, thanks for that recommendation, I'll look into it.
Addy, I was surprised to see how highly it's rated once I finally looked it up. Funny how all I wanted to do at the time was not pay shipping! On the other hand, the 70-210 that came with the Maxxum is a newer version and not rated as highly. I'll probably leave that with the Maxxum for use with film and keep the 75-300 with the Sony. |
