For 24 years I was an upper level manager at a Fortune 500 company in the states. Covid was brutal on my work home life as business was booming for us and I decided to retire. Took a job in construction material sales jan1 2021 in Florida were I live. Proved to be a great decision as so many people are moving here and housing is still booming. I have more business than I know what to do with. Although I have a computer science degree I never used my best skill is working with people. I am really good at connecting with everyone whether it was my bosses or co workers or associates I managed in my previous career or establishing relationships with builders in my current job.

@Addy & Harm, here also a mechanical engineer (ing) with an additional grade in Industrial Product Design. Worked at Thales, Philips Home Care and lately at Sensata (16 years already), an automotive company, managing the process engineering. Always have been tempted to pick up (part-time) teaching. Hobby's are typical for engineers I think, thinkering on lenses an building, servicing and repairing mechanical watches. Oh, and windsurfing ofcourse and subsequently fixing the gear I damage

More than 2 years after latest post: my daily job is....
Well, after a technical degree in engineering (for the Dutch members: HTS WTB) I started in the refrigeration world, where I was employed for over 22 years at different companies. During these years I did some educational work: I teached technicians in Refrigeration design during almost 20years in the evenings (1 evening per week, 26 times a year). After getting bored more and more I switched for a few years to sustainable engineering (does is exist?), then to a Mental health organisation and since august 2017 I'm in education again. I'm teaching in Steam and sustainable energy on a MBO near Rotterdam. |

Welcome, Craoul! There should be some time left to take photos (and post them here)!

Salaries are usually good yes, and can go very high based on expertise and project management experience (and it's ludicrously high if you're employed in Switzerland ) - it's not where I am yet xD
Mostly the advantage is that currently there's no unemployment in this sector of activity. Many companies struggle to fill open positions (which is common in IT I guess). It's even more true now that the economy seems to be going much better than when I started a few years ago. |
