At the budget prime end I went for a super takumar 50 /1.4 M42 about L35 in total, manual focus but a great lens for the money

Absolutely. The TAMRON SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD should be in every Sony user's bag. Incredible lens at a reasonable price, even for a new version ($400). |

I just tried this site and got a popup congratulating me on being "the October 13th Winner" and presenting an OK button to continue with 'claiming my prize'. Don't recall the domain that showed up but it's not the maxxumeyes.com domain. I suspect somewhere in the past couple years the site has been hacked with a redirect. Not worth it to me to continue and risk picking up something nasty, just thought I'd post a caution to anyone going back through this thread. edit: www.maxxumeyes.com redirects to testbegin.com Edited by janders1957 - 13 October 2011 at 19:24 |

First rule about buying lenses is that you can't say what you want as lens #2 until you have bought and used lens #1. And you can't think about lens #3 until you are fully conversant with both #1 and #2. etc. etc. Each lens should compliment the others in your portfolio. However, one factor influencing your choice is simply availability.
I use a SONY 18 - 250 most often. It mightn't be perfect, but it covers almost every situation except macro. Which is why my second most used lens is the Cosina / Vivitar 100mm f3.5 macro. Much criticised - but it works! For technical choice, I would use my Sigma 170 - 500 more often, but it is its weight and size that deter me whereas the 18 - 250 does cover most things I would want to use it for. |

These may be risky on SLT, but seem to work great on Sony SLRs.
Sigma/Quantaray 24mm 2.8 $50-100 - Super sharp, but loud AF Sigma 28mm 1.8 older version $100-200 - harder to find in A mount. Sigma/Quantaray 50mm 2.8 macro old version $50-150 - Super sharp again Also Minlota 24mm 2.8 - $150-200 I second the 100mm/3.5 as well, I've bought 3 of these in 3 different mounts(Sony, Canon, Nikon) for less than $70 each. |

NECRO ALERT! Since 2007, things have changed, so I wonder if there is even a spec of reality left in these prices.
For a more current pricing idea, I suggest Kurt Munger's site here. |

"KM 70-210 f4 (beercan) $150-225: The legend, sharp at all apertures / zoom, nice bokeh, good macro, heavy and built like a tank, slow AF. A must have lens." Well I had one and sold it on ebay fast as I could. Maybe I had a duff copy but wide open at 210mm I could not describe it as sharp. My pentacon 200/4 showed it up badly. |

I second Sigma 24mm F2.8. Amazing sharpness @f4 and would add sigma 90mm F2.8 macro... for under $200.
90mm f2.8 in 7th sharpest lens for sony mount and I have no doubts 24mm is 11th according to photodo |

An EXCELLENT CONTRIBUTION to Dyxum knowledge. I suffer from incurable lens lust.

Bit harsh on the 35-70 f4 I reckon - the weird range just means less demand and very cheap prices. I purchased an excellent copy for L20 and have it on my A200 most of time. Admittedly, zooming with my feet gets a bit tiring after a while!
I'd also like a add a vote for the 35-200xi powerzoom. Decent range, great colours and built like a tank - best of the xi lenses by a mile, and can be had for around L90 if you can find one. |
