Quick fire question hopefully.

Is there a better option if a tripod head which gives a good level of more precise control like a geared head but in a lower weight package? Manfrotto has their MHXPro3WG which is only 750g in weight, which is still a fair amount of you are on foot for any distance.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

well, you could go with something like the leofoto g2 but this isn't as versetile as the one you metioned.

all the other kinds off geared heads are what i believe around the same weight.

I use the Manfrotto 3D Junior Pan/Tilt tripod head as the light option.

Works well with my mirrorless camera setup. It's not quite as precise as a proper geared head, but it's a lot more precise than many other heads I've used

I have the Benro GD3WH geared 3-way head. I am happy with it. It only weighs 740 gram and is geared. Link: Benro UK.

I don't know how far you are from Sheffield, but Harrison Cameras has it in stock if you want to take a look.

Benro is only a company I have encountered in Amazon before but I think I may know someone who has a Benro geared head that I can have a look at. Thank you for that suggestion. Being a non-driver, Sheffield is a bit out of the way for me but I'll read up on the GD3WH, thank you.

Certainly looks promising! Sadly these are not available at my local London Camera Exchange however it does show up on Amazon UK. The maximum load weight of 3kg isn't an issue either.

I wish the pan and primary axis movement were also geared, and I would like to add parallel axis movement.

I must admit that I have had the G2 for a couple of years myself. It is certainly alot more travel-friendly than any of the Manfrotto geared heads; but sadly also lacking in capabilities as well (when compared to a normal geared head which has a similar range of movement as a 3-way pan & tilt). The G2 has its uses still so I kept it.

I've been doing a little Google research and yes I know that can have some serious drawbacks like misinformation but there are some who state geared heads in particular are useful for macro work, even more so when macro lenses greater than 1:1 are used. Some food for thought there.

I own Sunwayfoto GH-ProII geared head, very sturdy and doesn't wobble at all. I had the Manfrotto XPRO geared head which was awful.

Thank you for your feedback on the MHXpro3WG geared head by Manfrotto. This doesn't seem to be the mostly highly rated tripod head of all time for sure. I think it's safe to say I'll be avoiding this one then. I have other Manfrotto products and I'm perfectly happy with those so this is a bit of a surprise.

Thanks also for suggesting the Subwayfoto geared head; I'll read up on that one and see if I can source one locally.
