Recently came across this lens which seems to be a copy of the trioplan. So it intrigued me especially as it's a lot cheaper than any trioplan 100mm and probably more easily sourced. I believe it was only recently announced but not sure...

Comes in m42 mount so easy enough to adapt.

I don't like the busy bokeh and that is whole purpose of this lens. So, not for me.

Copying older lens designs has become commonplace with Chinese producers.

Maybe a more pleasant bokeh is created by this Cooke Speed Panchro 50mm F/2 copy - check the image with the glass on the bar. Personally I find Cooke designs absolutely fascinating - from a large format photography perspective (unfortunately I lack the Euro 7500 to get an original LF lens from Cooke). But a copy might be the poor man's solution, even if its only for FF.

A 75mm Speed Pancro copy is in the making as it is reported here.

Thanks for the review, from samples i have seen so far it seems no better or worst than the trioplan.

I guess the old lens designs are pretty simple to copy and cheap to manufacture. They can obviously undercut the originals by a large margin and probably still make a fairly decent profit. No need to spend money on lens design and innovation, "easy pickings" as it were.

Will probably pick one up if/when they show up even cheaper in the used market.
