The Verdant Works museum tells the story of Dundee's jute industry in a former mill. The museum covers much of the social history of this industry in Dundee as well as preserving and restoring the industrial fabric and machinery that was used. I decided to present some monochrome photos using the colour of the paint on the front gate as a guide for a toned treatment. All taken with an A7 III and FE 24-70 F4.

The rotative beam engine was ordered from Boulton and Watt in Birmingham in February 1801. Costing £517, it was used to turn machinery at the Douglasfield Bleachworks, located on the River Dighty just outside Dundee.

Interesting story and set of images that reveal the story. The last image, photographically, is the strongest to my eyes. Dundee - grew up with Dundee marmalade in the house - a special treat (perhaps the same city?).
Hatred corrodes the container it is carried in. http://rogerrex.zenfolio.com/

Yes indeed - there are three Js in Dundee - Jute, Jam, Journalism. The latter being due to DC Thomson, publisher of comics like the Beano and also local newspapers in Scotland.

Nice set of images - and the processing suits the subject.

Thanks for the reminder Howard.

Dundee is in my blood - my grandmother was the daughter of one of the jute barons. Sadly he was extremely productive when it came to children, as was my grandmother - so the fortune was rapidly dispersed. When I finally visited a few years back the Verdant Works was a 'must visit'.

Hi Howard,

These are lovely images and I have to say 'you can't beat a nice bit of toning' and this is a great example of that. The tone you've chosen suits the subject really well and I rather like the polished surfaces this brings out.

I too like the last one - such a strong lead-in to that polished canopy - but the others similarly work very well - they tell the tale of Victorian industry at it's very best (and grandest!) in a really informative yet pictorial way. A set to be really proud of!

Thanks for sharing and somewhere I must try and remember to visit if I'm ever in the area.

Tale care and best regards, Neil.
My Mantra: "Comment on other's work as you would wish to have yours commented upon". Go on - it's fun!
