Is it possible to set the camera so I can start and stop video shooting using the shutter button, or do I have to use the video button itself?

Thanks

As far as I know, It's the "Movie" button only.

It should be only possible to choose if activate the "movie button" with mode dial on "movie mode" or also in any other position

No. Is there a reason why you would want to?

The A77II supports initiating movie recording over infrared and USB remotes. I believe wifi too.

I find it awkward to use the movie button when holding the camera with 70-300G lens and battery grip attached

I think the "Movie" mode is meant to be used via the view screen instead of the EVF in conjuncture with a tripod, gimble or cage. A bit awkward viewed through the EVF but not that much more than the reach for the AEL button for back focusing.

Yes, I have the Sony RMT-DSLR2. Which wired remotes do you have in mind?

I am not talking about Multi-terminal wired remotes but actual USB remote control like the Sony RCC Windows application or RCCAndroid.

But the Sony RM-VPR1 remote control (includes a multi-terminal cable) as well as the similar knock-off JJC RM-VPR1 both supports tethered video start and stop via the multi-terminal.

I find them very useful for hitting the video start/stop button fast without shaking the camera when recording wildlife with a long lens mounted on a tripod.
