I'm in motoring nostalgia mode now so I thought I'd share a few photos of my vehicles that have worn my personal numberplate:

They are personal plates. The NETHERLANDS is one of the rare countries where plates are connected to a specific car.

With personalised plates, how do you know which car speeded if they all have the same plates? |

In Belgium a plate is personal (and can be personalised) but can only be used on one vehicle at the time. But when I bought a new car (and buy a new one in the future) my registration plate will stay the same.
I would think the same is true for the UK and these pictures were all taken at different points in time, but I'm sure Brian can tell us. |

I'm really sorry to have caused a bit of confusion here. Pieter is quite right, all of the photos in my post were taken at different times and L4 BCY has only even been assigned to one vehicle at a time. (If I had actually owned all of those at the same time it would probably mean I would have a Leica M11).
![]() Personalised number plates here in the UK are very big business and some are sold for ridiculous amounts, very often worth more than the vehicle they are assigned to! My wife bought my plate many years ago as a Christmas present and it signifies (to us at least) "Lesley for Brian Colin Young". Every time I have changed my car, or motorbike, I have paid to have the number transferred to the new car and the original registration number is reassigned. There are a lot of regulations but the most significant one, as our number plates signify year of original registration is that you cannot put a private number plate on a vehicle that would make it look newer than it is, but it is okay to assign an old plate to a new car. A couple of links to illustrate: UK Government website page explaining the rules here 10 most expensive number plates sold in the UK here Thanks for taking an interest Addy and to Harm and Pieter for explaining. |

Aha, that explains it
