Topic: Want to pick up a Maxxum 7D, but... Posted: 05 February 2023 at 13:30 |
I'd like to pick up a Maxxum 7D to play with, but the FFB issue has me scared for the money they still bring. I wouldn't mind risking a few dollars but not $2-300 for something that may not work for more than a bit.
I've looked through the forum and understand there's really no support for them anymore and I doubt I could fix it myself. Since none of the eBay sellers seem to mention it, they're probably unaware and wouldn't be able to tell me if I asked. Any thoughts? Are there still ways to get it fixed, or is it at the end of the line? I suppose I could post a WTB ad here, but they seem to be few and far between. Thanks! |

I had the same idea a while ago. I bought one from a UK shop; unfortunately it arrived DOA, as in FFB, although it was advertised as tested and fully working. I returned the camera and got my money back (minus shipping and import duties, thank you brexit) . No 7D for me! Sorry to be so negative, but as you say, sellers are not aware of the FFB issue, or want you to think so ...

Wow, those are expensive! Since when are these prices? I think I remember them around €100, they are double that now.
Buy from a place with a good return policy. Within the US in your case, else you loose the duties. @darosa: "welcome to the Brexit" |

Problem is they're kind of rare at resellers. I check KEH fairly often, nothing in quite a while. I don't think MPB handles them anymore. There wouldn't be any duty for a used camera like that. A-mount lenses seem to be going up too. No idea why, other than it seems all used gear has increased. |

When i sold my 7D it worked fine and i had a lot of enjoyment from it. The concern i had was batteries. I've had an a500 develope the FFB problem, which wasn't much of a problem. I rarely had the drive on single advance and the first frame wasn't usually the critical one. I still have and use an a700 and a850 for the plain joy of it. Both are very capable direct descendants of the KM-7D.

Never heard of FFB with the A500, but it seems you're not the only one. Bummer.
The Pentax K10D and K20D used the same battery (D-Li-50) as the KM 5D and 7D (NP-400) and you can still can get third party batteries. |

Well, I picked up a Maxxum 7D last year for about $140 from a shop in Minnesota. All worked well and so far no FFB. Whether it was fixed for FFB or not the camera shop couldn't confirm for me, but since it was free from this issue and there was a return policy I gave it a go.
What I really would like to know is who is currently still using a Maxxum 5D/7D, never sent their camera in for the FFB fix and to this day do not have FFB??? There must be some people out there who have cameras with over 30, 40 or 50 thousand pictures that can tell us their camera situation. If you are out there please chime in. Though I have a FFB fixed Maxxum 5D, 2 A700's and an A77MII I'd still like to get another operational 7D. However, I'd really like to know more stats about the people who have camera's still working that never had the fix for FFB. |

I've not had great success with off brand batteries. Though the "UP Start" np-400 batteries I was using after the OEM ones gave up were ok. All other replacement non OEM batteries have been dreadful. |

I have 2 7D's. One was purchased new after i learned KM was sold to Sony and this body has fewer than 250 shots taken with it.
Did not know of FBB at the time so this body has not been repaired nor does it have enough actuations to experience FBB. I purchased a second body a while later in used condition that had the FBB repair done at Precision Camera prior to my purchase and it came with a copy of the invoice/service info about that. This body did work properly for a few thousand pictures but it eventually started the FBB syndrome again. Also own a 5D that is beginning t experience AS failures. Weird is that sometimes it just plain works and other times it just won't start up or shut down. Seems like if i mount a lens prior to start up, it may work. If i start it without a lens, the AS whirring noise will just continue. |

Thanks all. I guess I'll keep an eye out for the right deal or skip it. Maybe a Sony A100 would be a better bet, but there's something about old Minolta stuff that appeals to me.
WOOT! So, immediately after posting the above, I checked KEH and found a 5D with battery and charger in Excellent Condition for $102.00. I added their 2-year warranty for $19 more, I figure if I can get 2 years or warranty repair/return out of it I won't complain. That camera was not there yesterday. Not a 7D but, good enough for the fun factor! Edited by Brownie - 08 February 2023 at 00:06 |

thanks!
No idea why I'm so geeked about this camera. I honestly can't wait to see what the 500/8 reflex and 80-200/2.8 can do on this sensor! |
