Does anyone have an life-hack tips for waterproofing tripod legs. Any kind of small/portable solution. Maybe a plumbing thing? Or plastic that is easy to source in that shape (three bin bags + elastic bands perhaps?)
I'm specifically talking about salt water, so more of a concern than fresh water. When not outdoors my big tripod is a hat stand so I'd rather it didn't get smelly sea water inside it. My tripod is a very very very very old Gitzo model (possibly as old as me) - but has the same leg design as the current models. Tubes with twist/lock. All I can think of is three condoms but they're kinda slimey and not long enough. |

I'd experiment with PVC (or similar) pipe, capped and sealed at one end. For the length, decide how deep you're likely to go, then add another foot for safety. And yes, you'd want some kind of 'suspenders' to hold the pipes in place when the tripod is lifted.

Bicycle inner tube. Easy to cut and glue.

Look into rubber or silicone self adhering tape.

Super answers - thank you!
I think the bike inner tubes will be my first try - will post images one day of the set-up. Will probably aim for one per leg and rather than seal the end I'll keep it long (twice the length I need) and fold it back up the leg to elastic band tie it (this will create a seal). I'm not going deep, welly boots on though. But even at ankle deep or just on wet sand I know my tripod would suffer without some effort to seal. But I'll also visit the DIY store and see what plastic pipes/tubes they have. Thanks again. |

How about Kase Waterproof Tripod Leg Covers? A set of four cost SEK 170 or roughly GBP 15. Can be seen on this swedish site (use google translate): https://www.photax.se/product/kase-waterproof-tripod-leg-covers

I am in salt water frequently (but never above the lowest "joint" of the tripod leg). I ALWAYS carefully and thoroughly wash the tripod legs with fresh water at home after a day's use. In fifteen years I have never had a problem.

I like that there is an official product for this ... gonna try the inner tubes though.
I'm not sure what my old tripod is made of and how water tight the feet are, I'd only be foot/ankle deep at most but it destroys any normal-ish foot wear. I'm more concerned with the smell of old sea water (getting inside the tripod) really. I've had this ridiculously big tripod for about 15 years and have only ever used it in the studio so time to try it outdoors. |

A good coat of auto wax on the tubes wouldn't hurt, the new hybrid ceramic formulas are awesome and about as slick as you can get for a finish.

cool - 'tripod condom' wasn't working as a search term and I'll admit I didn't even think to search for anything new had no idea these were legit products It might cost a tiny bit more but I think I'll go with the inner tube option - the thicker rubber will hopefully last longer (more uses). I value my very old and very heavy tripod too much to ruin it - and I use it in the studio - I'm more concerned with water getting inside it and staying there and it getting smelly (in the home) as I am about protecting it. Wooden floors here and if it leaks water I'd be pretty miffed. |
