Welcome fellow Dyxumers!
I have prepared a simple webpage to help identifying original Sony NP-FW50 batteries as well as counterfeits. For now there is not much information there, and the identification of the serial number is not yet fully functional, e.g. not all days of the month between 16 and 31 are recognized and there is no verification of the SN format against the battery version (and there are minor differences). I will update the site with new photos, and I will improve SN identification based on newly collected data. If you want to share a photography of battery copy which is not yet in the gallery, please send it to the e-mail address provided on the website. Both originals and fakes are welcome as long as they're Sony or claim to be Sony. Please do not send photos of batteries of other manufacturers or models. I hope that my little site will grow enough to list all possible variants of both genuine and fake batteries so everyone can easily identify them. Update: serial number validation now correctly recognizes manufacture year of some edge dates and all month days except 18th, 30th and 31st. It also identifies country.
It look like some other batteries are using same serial number encoding, for example NP-FM500H. They can be checked as well. |

Nice work Hawk, I checked my 8 Sony batteries and 7 came back with the correct info, age seems correct as well as the country of manufacture (Japan for the old ones from my NEX5 and NEX6, China for the newer ones from my A7 and A7ii).
There was one which gave the right country info but gave one red character (the second J) and gave a month but "unknown or invalid day code". The serial number of that one is K2JJE 1ES |

Thanks!
Can you send me photo or link to photo of bottom side of that battery with K2JJE 1ES in good enough quality for reading QR code? Or simply read QR with your phone and send me result. I'm pretty sure its manufactured on 18th day of month and QR can prove it as it contains date in numeric form (unless its micro QR, then its useless). Year can still come out wrong, especially for older batteries (non np-fw50) and some edge dates, for example 2014 may in fact be 2004 in some rare cases. It is a bit complicated to get it 100% right due to three factors being involved in figuring it out. So partially year is based on my guessing which in turn is based on lots and lots of serial numbers that I analyzed. It can be improved, but for that I need more serial numbers, especially those starting with letter L or F, but also those with K. So if anyone has any Sony battery in which 5 character serial number starts with these, send me message with it or post it here (photo is not needed). If you know year in which you bought your battery or with what camera model it was included, please include that info as well. It will greatly help to rule out false results for year. |

Just sent you an email with a full-res picture of my 8 NP-FW50 batteries. Hope this helps
![]() Fortunately I haven't got any "fakes", only 3 more 3rd party batteries, of which two now autodischarge when not in use and the third has definitely lost it's durability, while the old sony's from my NEX5 and NEX6 are still going strong. So they might be more expensive but from my experience (a small sample) they seem to be worth it. EDIT: can you PM me your email address? I used the one in your profile and the email got back "undelivered" Edited by pegelli - 05 February 2019 at 19:28 |

I've added two fakes found on eBay with serial numbers matching previously known and confirmed fakes. Also serial number check form now have list of known numbers of fake batteries. New entries will be added to this list for every confirmed fake which serial number matches or is similar to real ones.
Additionally there is short howto on the way with few tips for identifying fakes and more photos of genuine batteries will be added soon. |

Thank you for going to the trouble of identifying fake and genuine batteries. Note: The link to the website at the base of your post cannot be opened as the server cannot be found.
Would it be safe to say that only Sony NP-FW50 batteries with the hologram can be safely presumed to be genuine? |

They can produce holograms too , so no , just because it says sony on it and it has a hologram , it doesn't make it genuine . |

Don't know whether this is due to some security setting, but I can't open the link to the site.

Hawk hasn't logged in to Dyxum for over a year now but he did post his e-mail address on his Member Profile page.
