Guess what.

It doesn't.

I am now the proud owner of a USB stick loaded with about 200+ cd's and various other tracks in a BMW format that no-one seems to be able to convert/read; not even BMW themselves on the X2 via the USB interface. Not sure if this is progress if I'm honest...

So - question is/are:

1. Any known converters to get the format into something I can listen to without having to go the re-record route?
Most likely it should be possible to convert (I doubt that they would use totally obscure format), but since I cannot see what is on that USB stick, I can only speculate...

2. Any personal recommendations for stand-alone players that I can load with music so that I can bluetooth/USB interface it in the car and start to listen to music again? I do have an iPhone but, again, that's a company item and I'd rather not load it with iTunes etc.?
If you plug that USB stick to a computer, can you see what files are on that device? If so, what filename suffix is used? And if you cannot see the contents of the USB stick, then it is possible that it uses some alternative filesystem that is not recognized by your computer's OS. For example, the filesystem could be ext2/3/4, which is the common filesystem for Linux and Linux is often used as the base in various embedded systems. To determine the filesystem you can use tools like TestDisk.

Hole's version of Old Age. I really like both their's and Nirvana's.

Wilco’s new album “Ode to Joy”. Definitely not easy listening, but I already love it!
