Well, I'm currently living in Sunnyvale, looking to move to Boulder Creek. I'll probably be driving a chainsaw more than a camera for the first month or two. There are a few spookier cemeteries on the South bay... also one down in Santa Cruz where some ancestors were buried a very long time ago - I'll try to take a peek next time I'm down there.

How's this for spooky? This is up where my brother lives in Nevada City, Ca -- this marker was set in 1861 and from the look of it may have been broken for 100 years:

For the first time, we have several members all expressing interest... this is encouraging!

Several are suggesting that "now" won't work, but "in the Spring" will.

Dunno about others, but my family's schedule tends to fill up fast-ish, and QUITE far ahead ...    So, I'm going to propose a date now, for us to get onto our calendars (or suggest different date(s)).

So... how's about Sat. 31 March?

Cherries should be showy in the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, (along with good shows in several other GGPark venues), or find a "spooky cemetery" as has been suggested... But let's get a date we can (hopefully) all manage, first.

The one thing that gives me pause about the Tea Garden is the thought of weekend crowds -- and in any event they have a policy of not letting people stop more than 15 minutes in one spot. A clot of photographers may attract a bit more attention. I do like the idea of colorful spring foliage though. I'm going to pursue that thought a bit offline and see if I can scrape something together.

Dave, I'm also in Sunnyvale! So cool to have another Dyxum member living in the same city. If we all agree to a date, I'll put it on my calendar to ensure that I'm free that day.

Hi Michael, I didn't know there were any Dyxumers so close. We'll have to meet up one day. The 31st sounds like a winner to me for the date. I'm still trying to get in touch with a docent at a local attraction that invited me to come shoot... waiting for a return call on that. What are we looking at, half a dozen shooters?

So far we have the following suggestions:

SF Golden Gate Park
Spooky Cemetary

Keep 'em coming!

Let's broaden that "Tea Garden" to "anywhere in GGate Park"...

Dave, it would be great to meet up, especially since we are so close. Looks like the SF area is where we've tentatively decided? We could meet north of the Golden Gate Bridge and head over to Marin.

Sausalito -- shops/streetshooting, waterfront/docks, etc
Over the hills to the Marin Headlands... views of the GGB/SF...
Marin CivicCenter (Frank Lloyd Wright)...
Muir Woods (Lucas shot the "Forest Moon of Endor" there)...
The Bay-Model (lighting is tough, though! bring tripods & flashes!)
Other (south or central, to minimize driving) Marin places?

Keep the suggestions coming!

I've got one other suggestion/request, btw... anyone got a photogenic S.O./sib/friend/etc (M or F... I'm not experienced-enough shooting models to have a preference) who might be willing to be run ragged modelling for those of us who like to shoot non-studio portraits? For a signed model-release, I'd happily deliver a good print or some web-portfolio JPEGs... Can't throw any $$$ into the mix, alas! Still, if we could get 2-3 models in an interesting location, both 'togs and models could end up with some NICE portfolio shots!

I think seeing if we could get some "volunteers" would be a great idea! Fort Mason could be another cool one if we're trying to stick by SF.

OK, I've followed up on the idea that I alluded to earlier. I made the acquaintance of one of the higher-level Filoli Center docents while on a Half Moon Bay photo outing in Feb. of last year. I finally managed to connect with her by phone tonight and discuss a photo outing. I could get a tour easily enough but for a group we would each have to come up the $15 admission. Filoli has some of the most amazing gardens in the area and the house itself is amazing. While there are other docents who specialize in the house or garden and may know more specific plant names, construction details, etc. she is one of the few who can also take us into the nature preserve area, to a natural pond and even -- wait for it -- the family cemetery! She says it's not particularly spooky but I gather it's not exactly plain either. I'm sure we can make something of it.

Since I hope to be living over the hill in Boulder Creek by the time we do this, I'm not especially attached to going to SF or Marin County. This is sort of in-between, right at the south end of Crystal Springs(also very photogenic).

About the date -- if we decide to do this, the 31st is probably the worst day, since they are having a big "Spring Fling" event with food, live music, etc. and it will be PACKED. April 7 or Mar. 24 would be better, the earlier date might be preferable since there might be some trampling due to the crowds.

If this sounds good I need a headcount to set up a reservation ASAP.

Hmmm... Doesn't seem to be resonating with anyone. Is it the distance, admission price, or...?

Sorry, haven't checked this thread in a while. I am good with the price and distance.
