Let me speak up with a very firm "maybe". ![]() I would absolutely love to do a meet (mini- or otherwise). Honesty compels me to admit that various RL conundra sometimes mean that I have to suddenly drop my plans to cover an emergency. So -- realistically -- I cannot promise anything in this regard. But keep updating this thread! If I can manage a meetup, I'd love to do so. Presuming that something then-ish happens... what sorts of availability would you expect to have? Are you hoping for an hour or two with Dyxum'ers, a half-day event, whole-day, multi-day? Would you hope for a local-ish photo-op, or interested in more driving to iconic or unusual sites / sights ? Or ... ? |

Whatever fits in with others. Remembering that my body is going to be 9 hours out and I'm only over for a couple of days, I'm probably better in the mornings as I'm flaking out in the evenings, but I can always try sleeping the afternoon...

Hello Bob J
I can add; I know Stanford U quite well I live about 20 min (on a good day) from SFO, I know SFO quite well also (I live here) Its about 20 min (on a good day) from SFO to Stanford I can easily meet you at SFO and we can go to Stanford. Like most large campuses its big and bewildering, its known as the "Farm". I don't know everything but I can help you navigate the place. I don't think professors who have taught there for decades know it all Its in the middle of silicon valleys venture capital area, where most familiar names like Google, facebook, Hewlett Packard, etc. etc. got their start and is still humming w all kinds of activity. The Campus is beautiful and almost right in the middle is the great Rodin museum where I've spent years photographing those wonderful sculptures and such. One can spend the whole day just w the sculptures, outside in the sculpture garden and of course in the museum itself photographing as I have a few times. The museum is free of charge! So Bob if there is a meeting w can work out and I can be of help, I'd be happy to do whatever I can I put this out here in case Steve S, Is the S for Sonoma? has anything to add and Steve: if Bobs trip falls thru and your ever coming to the Bay Area give me a pm and we will do a little mini meet and go photograph whatever you want down here, even the great Rodin museum in Stanford or if you have something going on in Sonoma, just give me a pm and I can pop up there easy. I've actually been to most of the wineries in Napa and Sonoma and more and do a mini Dyxum meet ![]() All right guys, there it is, looking forward to a meet_________Joseph |

Sounds great.
I'm just off to Nuremberg for another trip (only two days for the European ones). Judging on the number of cancellations/postponements this year, I'd say this Stanford trip has a 66% chance of going ahead (looking at it on the positive side, far better than evens). We certainly have more US trips coming on than we used to have - I was in NJ in December and am also due in Washington DC in January, so I'm getting good use out of my ESTA... The normal form is that they fly me in one day, I crash out early evening in the hotel (remembering that my body thinks it is 4AM when the SF clock says 8PM) and I'm up early the next morning. I usually have at least one clear day (usually try to get two when the distance is so great) before picking up the cells on the last day (usually late afternoon local time) and getting an overnight plane home for the delivery... so I should have at least 1.5, more likely 2.5 days in the locality. They will most likely put me in a hotel near Stanford, or near the airport - but I'm not likely to find that out until possibly a week to go. From the looks of things I should be able to use public transport reasonably easily (making sense of the local ticketing is always a learning curve). Bob |

Hello
I'll start w I'd like to see a mini meet among us happen. I have never met a fellow Dyxum'er, so I'll be happy to do whatever needs to happen. Bob, your quote "I should be able to use public transport reasonably easily". Unfortunately, here in California "The land of the car", to say the least, public transit is inadequate. We have one system of note, BART (Bay Area Rapid transit) which travels under the Bay and exists mostly in the East Bay. I'm afraid at Stanford you'll be mainly reliant on Uber. I'm not doing much this feb. Me and my car, (a Lexus) would be more than happy to assist a fellow Dyxum'ers transportation needs. "I can take you, us, anywhere" ![]() In 2.5 days, depending on your stamina, the 3 of us could do, see a lot. I have always admired your photos, just read some of my replies and wouldn't mind picking up a photo tip or 2 from the Master ![]() |

I think this view is a little bit pessimistic about public transit, but we're certainly not up to the Brit standard! SFO to Stanford is about 30min by car, about 90min on transit (depending on weekday/weekend and time of day). We have a single train-track running up the peninsula between San Jose (at the south end of the bay) & San Francisco, for the "Caltrain" commuter-oriented service. There's a connector shuttle-bus from SFO to the train. There is also a connector-shuttle to BART, but (as noted) BART is more an East-Bay thing -- it won't help you reach Stanford. Buses do OK, but there are a bunch of different little transit districts... per county, per town, etc. SFO-to-Stanford should be OK, mostly on Caltrain. Google Map's public transit options are pretty good in helping develop routes. Mostly, the public-transit systems all use the "Clipper Card" system, which is a pseudo-credit-card that you pre-load with cash and slap onto the card-reader to embark/debark. MOSTLY, they use Clipper... A few districts don't, and you need cash fares (exact fare / no change). Uber or Lyft (and Coast's kind offer!) will probably be a part of your desired transit mix! |
