I'm an ex- Northerner (and Midlander as well); possibly fall somewhere between the two stools - but I think there's more than that to it!

Best regards, Neil.

I was wondering if somewhere central would work for a wider group of people, but when I searched it seems that the geographic centre of Britain is somewhere in Lancashire, https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/blog/where-is-the-centre-of-great-britain, i.e. '7 km north west of Dunsop Bridge, Lancashire, by Whitendale Hanging Stones on Brennard Farm in the Forest of Bowland (SD 64188.3, 56541.43)'.

If we ignore Scotland, the centre of England & Wales, including the Isle of Man, is adjacent to a pub in Walmley, Sutton Coldfield. It might be good for a social, but is there anything to photograph there beyond the three golf courses near by?

Sutton is merely a dull satellite of Birmingham. Friends who met at university occasionally meet in Birmingham as we can all get there and back in a day. Macca is the only active member I can think of who lives north of Lancashire, and even so, the direct train from Glasgow takes only half an hour longer than mine from Bangor.

I grew up (almost) in Sutton Coldfield! However, it is but a shadow of its former self and the only redeeming factor is it gives its name to Sutton Park - the largest inner city green space in the whole of the UK. However, once that's said, then that's about it - but as a child and growing up in the area it was still 'a big thing'!

I've been wracking my memory banks to see if there are any really good things to go see in the area which are readily accessible and I've come up short I'm afraid; nearer to the City Centre there are the Botanical gardens, Aston Hall (a Tudor hall preserved by the council and a stone's throw from Villa Park) plus the rejuvenated city centre itself - Gas Street basin; The Jewellry Quarter all have historic elements as well to go for?

Just didn't want to see Sutton Coldfield get a 'raw deal' though....

Best regards, Neil.

Neil, I used to know Sutton quite well, my brother used to live there and one of his ex-wives still does. The park is lovely but I'm sceptical of its photographic potential.

There are some suggestions for Birmingham here, most of which I've photographed in the last couple of years, I particularly favour Digbeth.

I need to get out a bit more, so how about the Black Country Museum near Birmingham. Martin

That'd be a from me actually - one place I've yet to get to.

Best regards, Neil.

The Photography Show is 16-19 March 2024 next year, and I'd be happy to combine a visit to the show with a photowalk near the centre at that time.

We shouldn't forget Phil's original suggestion of London, possibly before Xmas?

London's too far for me for a photo meet unless I can tie it in with another event, and there's nothing else of interest just now. Might be able to do Birmingham in March, did you have a particular day in mind, Howard?

I suggested London because there are endless photo opportunites and that we have failed to agree on any other venue. I am very happy with Birmingham as an alternative.
