Congratulations, Martin!
I'll book the hotel for the Tuesday night and will visit the show earlier that day. Notwithstanding times of arrival, it would be good to have a possible place for a meal on the Tuesday evening. |

Did you book the Premier Inn? Travelodge Birmingham Central Newhall Street is quite a bit cheaper, I've stayed there before and it was fine.

Yes, I went for the one I mentioned above and the rate had gone up by £3 to £42. Gulp, I see the Travelodge is £26 ... Oh well, next time.

I'm booked in at the Travelodge, price nudged up here too as an impending dentist appointment stopped me booking straight away. It pays to get in quickly.

I am very tardy with my booking and have chosen the Ibis just outside the city centre - which has parking. i shall come up on Tuesday, but not for the show. Driving means I can visit a few spots on the ways to and from. I am very much a novice in Birmingham and have never eaten in the centre - but, a WW1 enthuiasts conference takes place there every spring. The pre-conference meet-up spot the evening before is the Old Contemptibles pub in Edmund St (fairly central). I usually do the conference as a day trip, so I haven't experienced it. I am sure it was chosen originally because of the name, but they have used it for years so it can't be that bad. |

That looks good and is just 10 mins on foot from my hotel. If we are agreed we could book a table for the group.
I haven't registered for the photo show yet - most here have suggested they're not going, but is anyone else interested in meeting there on the Tuesday? |

I don't expect to arrive at New Street until 20:30 so too late to dine but I may call in for a pint. I used to work in Edmund Street but have never been in the pub.
Could an admin please list this as a confirmed event. |

I've hung back on this until I had more idea of household itinerary and now I've made my decision. I am going to separate the two events and drive to the NEC for the show on one of the weekend days, probably Saturday, returning same day to give me completely flexible times to arrive and depart when I've seen enough.
I'd love to join the Birmingham walkabout on Wednesday 20th and it is not much more than an hour direct on the train from Oakham. Plan is to get off at B' New Street and find you around 9.30 if that's okay. Edited by bonneville - 01 February 2024 at 13:41 |

I wish you all a wonderful day(s) in my old home town - the names are just so evocative after being away for almost 40 years!
I hope you have grand weather and some inspiring locations (there are so many now I've been told) and I'm looking forward to seeing them on here. I can't make it (again....) due to work commitments but, as this is my last year in full employment, I am looking forward to the flexibility this will give me and to be able to become a 'UK Meeter' again! Take care all and best regards, Neil. |

We're sorry you can't make it too Neil, but it sounds like your retirement is just around the corner. I clearly remember my very first day of retirement, after 27 years in the Army followed by 24 years in the Civil Service. It was the first working day after my 65th birthday and I marked it by spending the day in the company of eleven other good friends at the Ansel Adams Dyxum meet at Greenwich in 2013.

I am hoping for something similar - the 1st September is going to be a very odd day I suspect! Thanks, Brian and have a wonderful day. Best regards, Neil. |

Yes, it would have been good to meet you Neil. Perhaps another Dyxum meet, or indeed an empty corner of Dungeness - quite the contrast!

Sorry you can't make it Neil - perhaps you should suggest a venue for a September 1st DM! If nothing else it would make it even odder.
