The old SLT 15-point AF sensor is really quite good. It is too bad it can't operate during faster burst in AF-C like the SLT cameras.

Pure phase-detect is much faster than Fast Hybrid-AF even on the A7III. The FE 85 F1.8 is hyped for fast focusing, but the Canon EF 85 F1.8 USM locks focus several times faster on an MC-11 with the same camera. The pokey Tamron SP 85 F1.8 USD will also lock faster on the LA-EA3. Now the native lens may be more accurate.

I am not sure if any E-mount camera ever uses pure phase-detect with native lenses. Sony doesn't say they ever do. All they advertise is Fast Hybrid AF. It seems like the A7III might only use phase-detect in AF-C. The A7II/A7RII/A6000 seem to use contrast-detect in AF-C--little micro wobbles. I could be wrong about the A7RII. I am not using it as my main camera--I don't use its AF much at all.

The Samyang 35mm F2.8 completes the fluttering of contrast-detect faster than the Tamron 35mm F2.8, but it is much slower than the Sony ZA.

I have never felt in AF-C and with native lenses, that NEX7 has been quicker than Dynax 5D and a6500 quicker than NEX7. All it looks very much the same about 14 years now.
a6500 & some nice e-mount af lenses 20/24/56/17-70/18-135 mm

I do not have that problem with Sony lenses, it annoyed me without limit with my Samyang 45/1.8.

Never felt de Sony FE 85/1.8 being slow, I use it with AF-C only. YMMV (as it does)
I think Matthew dislikes the FE 85/1.8 as much as I dislike the Samyang 45/1.8
