Hello, I bought a Sony A5100 and to record videos of electronic unboxings for youtube (something like that https://youtu.be/KovcK8YS9BA),
but the lens that comes with it, a 16-50 Model P1650, besides being very angular, leaves the video full of vignettes (dark corners). Which (cheap) lens model would you recommend? it would have to be straight and with a fast focus. I've been observing some models like: Sigma 19mm F / 2.8 Sigma 24mm F2.8 Sigma 30mm 2.8 E-mount Which model would you recommend for this case? I accept suggestions from other lenses too |

Something like sigma 16mm f1.4
But what I'd actually suggest is to sell your camera and buy something like the new Sony ZV1 which is essentially designed for making videos like this with great AF for recognising products and the presenters eyes. |

You're clearly on an budget, so, get something cheap. The Sigma 19/2.8 DN will fit your use case.
You mean the Samyang 24/2.8 (not Sigma) I think. That might be slightly long for what you want to do, the Sigma 30/2.8 surely is. You might want to look at the Samyang 18/2.8 - but that might be outside your budget. The Sigma 16/1.4 is an expensive lens. If you can afford it, get a better camera. The AF of your A5100 is not that good (it is after all an older camera). That will be more of a bottleneck then the lens. Food for thought: you could also opt for a manual lens and work out a format that does not require (as much) focus changes. What do you mean by "angular" and "straight"? |

I would also suggest a different camera, either a
- used Sony RX100 III (if you are happy with 1080p) - used Sony RX100 IV (if you want 4K) They both have 24-70mm equivalent and are f1.8-2.8 DO NOT get the RX100 VI or VII (wrong lens for home vlog/unboxing) The problem with the lenses you've selected [19/24/30 primes] is that one day you might get something in a really big box and other days something in a really small box ... and here a zoom would make a lot more sense. One of the reasons I got my RX100 was for selling stuff on eBay. I use prime lenses for my normal photography, but for eBay I need a zoom. These are less than half the price of the new Sony ZV-1. Both have 180' flip to the front screens. And if you are in a home studio environment with little background noise then the on-camera microphone is used by many many YouTube vloggers. The new ZV-1 is the latest version on this [essentially an RX100 in a new body design] but is in a different price range. Note that the 'pro' youtubers will spend considerable cash on their lighting and sound set-ups (bad light and bad sound = very very poor video) ... your room lighting will NOT be good enough to be noticeable. Good luck. |

Actually re-thinking this
... an alternative, and perhaps the better use of your lens budget is to spend the cash on lighting You can probably record decent audio on a budget external mic (to your computer) If you improve your lighting (levels/amount of light) assuming you are unboxing indoors then the AF of your current lens might/should improve. You shouldn't be seeing vignette if you are recording video at 16:9 (or crop to the new YouTube standard of 18:9) Maybe if you can post a photo of the current video set-up, positioning, and a screen shot of the vignetter you are unhappy with. I'm not famililar with video post-processing tools, but it could be that any vignette is removeable in post production. Or break from the norm and unbox outside in a bright shady area (not direct sun) |

You've asked this on at least three forums.
I'd use the Sony 20mm F2.8. The Sigma 16mm F1.4 might be nice. I have no experience with it. The Sony 16mm F2.8 is actually a pretty decent video lens. It has very little distortion. Edited by QuietOC - 29 June 2020 at 15:27 |

Can you explain what you mean by "angular". And with repect to vignetting I think you either have a dud lens (and should exchange it) or you're shooting full open. At f8 the vignetting is hardly there (at least on my copy) and should result in evenly exposed frames. So before investing in a new lens it's maybe better to first see what the best is you can do with the 16-50 to make sure you do everything right and the lens really is the problem. Maybe post some images at different apertures to see if we can help you diagnose the problem. |

Come to think of it, did you turn lens compensations on?

If he's getting vignetting , then most likely he hasn't . Either that of the software on his computer is disregarding it . On my NEX 7 I have it switched on . Now when I import it into Lightroom it just brings up the unedited ( uncorrected ) RAW . Whereas when viewed on the cameras LCD theirs no vignetting . Strange one. |

Sony 20mm F2,8 is good enough. Keep central area in mind and all can be ok.
