Not a reference to Game of Thrones... its actually coming.
Its my favourite season and I've been thinking of all the photos I want to take when it arrives. This will be my first winter with a proper camera! The fall to winter transition is so beautiful. What kind of things does everyone else look forward to photographing in this wonderful season of white. -Snow Flakes! -Frost on the plants and trees -Ice Flows in the river -Colourful scarfs and Toques -The razor thin ice membranes on puddles -Tracks in fresh snow -Skiing! -Breath "Fog" ... and that's just the beginning. Imagine all the wonderful things to photograph when we plunge into the minus 30s and 40s. |

Having never heard the word "toque" before, I looked it up on wikipedia:
"A toque ( /ˈtoʊk/ or /ˈtɒk/) is a type of hat with a narrow brim or no brim at all. They were popular from the 13th to the 16th century in Europe, especially France. Now, it is primarily known as the traditional headgear for professional cooks." Is that really what you wear in Canada? ![]() ![]() |

The word "toque" is used by English Canadians after the French Canadian "tuque", which is basically a "knit cap" or a "beanie hat".
It's pronounced "tük". I wear one all the time. |

Aha. I'm now slightly disappointed that you don't all dress like Blackadder in the winter. ![]() |

I just wanted to add that it was my hope of a Game of Thrones reference that brought me here... I was not disappointed.
It also seems that I've gained some knowledge of winter headwear! |

You guys are lucky to have snow - I never saw it in my entire life. Here in the south we will probably be on a 35oC summer. Although it does have some unique photographic opportunities - Christmas in the summer is an unique experience.

I suppose everything is relative, weather included ! I would count you lucky to have 35 degree weather year-round ![]() Trade houses for the season ? ![]() |

It's not for the season, really. In Sao Paulo, it's 32oC during all the year - in the summer, it gets to 35oC or more. Heat will kill you during all the year. |

It's kind of funny how the Irish tend to go "Ooh,noooh, rather rain than snow for certain!" when all you wish for is for the temp to drop by 3C so that it goes subzero and things become drier. +2C and rain is the saddest state of affairs there is.
Then again, snow on the roads in a country that usually doesn't get it makes traffic interesting. It's certainly understandable. But still, +2C and rain.. Edited by Kilkry - 01 October 2012 at 21:01 |
