I am very new to this group - But have a lot of Minolta and Sony experiences.
I have a Minolta Dynax 9 FILM camera that says the built in flash can trigger wirelessly [by flash morse code, pre-flashes] another wireless flash. There was probably not many wireless flashes in 1998 when launched, but today there are many, I use several new ones set to the old Minolta flash trigger, rather than the new Radio trigger. BUT I can not seem to get them to fire from the Dynax 9 built in flash ? THIS feature was the main reason for having a built in flash on a proffesional camera and appears to be overlooked every time the Dynax or Maxxun 9 is reviewed. |

Mount the flash on the camera .
Turn the camera on . Turn the flash on . Set the flash mode to wireless on the camera body ( WL) . It should now indicate on the flash it's in wireless mode , and when it's taken off the camera body the red light should be flashing on the front of the flash to indicate it's active . Pressing the AEL button should trigger a test fire . |

Hi, MANY, many thanks for accurate and quick response, that's why Minolta has a COMMUNITY :-) I've tried all above and replied in more detail by e-mail when I received this info from you. Hope that is the correct procedure and that message appears here too ?

I've not had an email , but it's always best to reply in the thread you've started where other people will see it and can help as well .
Or when others look for the same answers . I should add that the flash needs to be compatible . ie , a. Minolta flash that supports wireless flash on film cameras , or one of the rebadged Sony units . I noticed that you raise the issue on an old thread about the Sony HVL -F58AM . Is it that flash you have ? As already noted in the other thread it doesn't support TTL-OTF metering as Sony never made a film camera , so dropped support . |

Apologies I thought I had replied by email, and I should reply via the thread here, Thank you for a prompt and very accurate reply, as far as it goes.... and most probably works on older Minolta flashes. I've tried all that, but I can not get it to fire the Sony ones [Sony HVL-46 or 60] even when set to the Older Minolta flash optic wireless setting... Similarly I though the HVL-20 being a straight fit [not using an adapter as the others above do] might trigger the others wirelessly, but I realise this may not happen as even Sony to Sony is a faff to set up. BUT absolutely brilliant that Minolta fans are so generous in there time and responses. The AEL gave nothing, firing the flashes gave nothing... I may try mounting all modern flashes as control and remote... which might work.... In a way I wanted to validate Minolta's reason for a pop up, on a pro camera, even today ;-) Thanks so far.... |

Thanks for all the advise, as this has been continued on another thread, essentially I would love to prove the old Minolta wireless flash protocol would still work from this the best film camera Minolta produced. A big ask for a 1998 launched camera, but the Dynax 9 says the pop up flash can trigger flashes of it's generation like the 5400HS or Xi near this high spec. flashes.
So if the new Sony flashes HVL-45, 60 etc... can [I know I use them this way] be fired on the old Minolta optical system [as well as the Radio system] then why can I not get them to fire from the pop up on the Dynax 9. I have bought a 5400H to try firing that wirelessly and wireless ratio flash, which alone is enough justification to counter the many critics who said a pop up flash should never have been on a "pro" spec camera if it was too be taken seriously. Totally missing the wireless trigger capabilities. BUT and it's a bif BUT, if it can also STILL fire the later initial Sony [with a wireless adapter] and the new generation Radio wireless flashes, it would be brilliant to say, Sony has taken more than the Minolta DNA of it's bodies, but also a bit of the Minolta ethos of Backward compatibility. It's show this in supporting Alpha mount with a Alpha mount body so late in the day and the new FE/E to Alpha lens adapter. |

Hi - I am making such a hash of this and will carry on this thread now not the other one, I got such a lot of verification of my own experience but this thread is where I should have been I guess ?
Thank you ALL contributors. I will carry on trials and report back. I got all my flashes to work as expected, the 45RM,60RM, 60M with Radio adapter foot. I continued to work through the instructions to set up the older "flash" [optical Morse code] settings as I had another 60M that I bought £30 as it had a broken foot [I a fixed an ordinary flash foot to it, just so it would mount on a tripod] so that was always used as just a remote wireless flash [a bargain]. All those have [or had] the latest Multi Interface foot. MY 20AM ? has the ISO foot I have a Sony adapter for ISO to MI so can mount these on either camera flash type. Not sure if I can link an image from my flickr account ? All this [I apologise in advance] just so I can demo to my Camera Club, Leek Photographic Club, that the Minolta ethos, of backward compatibility, has reached Sony in quite a few ways..... ;-) |

The issue is that the Dynax 9 flash system works on earlier film protocols , TTL-OTF ( threw the lens , off the film ) metering .
Digital cameras work off a preflash TTL metering system to measure the required lighting , before delivering the correct amount if light . Later film cameras ( Dynax 7 onwards ) could use both systems . Minolta flash guns made from the d7 onwards can operate on cameras using either system. Therefore the camera can communicate with the flash regardless off its it's a film or digital camera . Examples are the Minolta 3600hs/d and 5600hs/d . Sony rebadged these as the HVL-F36/56AM . These work on any film or digital camera with the iISO hotshoe . Later Sony flashes dropped support for the film camera protocols . Think if the protocols being different languages . If you've got a later digital only flash ( the later sony flashes ) the flash doesn't understand the film camera and the film camera doesn't understand the digital flash . You might as well be putting a Nikon flash on your Minolta body . That's why the camera can't command the flash to fire wirelessly as they speak two different languages. Likewise the sony HVL-F20am works great as a controller on the Sony a900 , all it does on a film camera is flash at full power only . |

WoW - so much experience, I was going by the fact I could use the older optical [flash] control on the later RM flashes, and did do to add older M flashes to a 4 flash set up.... as wireless remotely fired ones.... but thought as the Dynax 9 mentioned wireless, it might also fire them. You helped sort out the logic and I was fooled by the fact I was using the RM [set for optical not Radio] as controller and that allowed my none RM older flashes to be fired.
On the Dynax 9 pop up, it's old tech as the control, not modern tech fooled into being a optical controller. I know my tech speak is not up to the mark, but you get the message. And thanks, I got there eventually, and was persuaded to buy a 5400HS anyway [inexpensive as was suggested] so my next projects are to use a this exceptional FILM camera for some remote flash, High Speed Synch and portraits in initially B&W Ilford. Then I have A Minolta XM to restore ;-) |
