I need to replace my broken lens hood for the Minolta AF 100-400 4.5/6.7 APO TELE. Anyone have one or know of a new equivalent (Sony perhaps).

Guess these are either rare or not worth trading. I can't imagine people losing the lens but still having the hood.

It's the same size fitting as the 85/1.4 RS and 28-70G, however those are all too short.

If you can't find one a 72 mm thread of a sufficiently long rubber hood will probably do the trick.
Mind the bandwidth of others, don't link pictures larger then 1024 wide or 960 pix high, see here

I found a used Min AF 28-70/2.8 lens hood or shade on eBay. This is much shorter than the 100-400, but has the same sized filter and bayonet fitting. (The Dyxum lens database is an incredible resource.) I then bought a cheapo Canon replacement shade for a lens with a 72mm filter, called ES-79II, on Amazon.

Glue them together and trim out the internal strengthening ribs from the ES hood, and one has a slightly larger, longer, wider lens hood than the original 100-400, but without any vignetting. The hood worked well. I found a real replacement, so have this ersatz hood just doing nothing

It wouldn't fit into the Minolta dedicated hardcase, but I found an old very large Canon case, LH-D18 in the back of the garage, and it all worked together neatly.

Try it for yourself, or contact me by PM. best regards
David

love the user name David!

Thanks for the information. I'll look out for that sort of combination. Pity you are in the US rather than round the corner in the UK. I don't go on e-bay that much but think it is about time I tried.
