Nice shots Kelly.
I don't have that lens but I do have the MD ZOOM ROKKOR 24-50/4 which is a bit of a legend. Mine's the MDII version about 1980 and it's still as silky smooth as ever. I should post some stuff in the other lens thread. |

Thank you, Peter! Your MD 24-50mm f4 is indeed a legend and quite a different lens. It is larger and heavier than my AF version. There may only be 5/6 difference in age? This one's size makes it a handy travel lens for the A7. 55mm filter thread. I try to only travel with 55mm filters so I have a step up ring for the FE 55mm f1.8. My copy has an unsettling wiggle to the lens barrel. Photosopher calls it on of the "Little Wigglers". I don't know how is effects IQ but I've made some nice photos with it. The color is what you might call pronounced Minolta Color. Many photos look like I've used a polarizer, when in fact I did not. Like these three, for example
BTW, just in case you haven't seen this review, you may want to check it out. An Italian site so you may have to run Google Translate: 24-50mm f4 Rokkor review Regards, Kelly |

Sony Alpha Rumors @ Fehmarn Museum! Is that an A mount or an E mount?

Thanks for the link Kelly, I hadn't seen that site before. Of course you're right, my MD lens is bigger all round although the LA-EA4 probably makes up the weight difference. When I bought the Minolta 9000 in 1986, I also purchased the 28-135/4-4.5 so my interest in zooms within that range disappeared which is no doubt why I never considered the AF 24-50.
I never sold any of the old SR mount lenses so, with the appearance of mirrorless cameras, I am now spoilt for choice and find it hard to decide with which combination to leave the house. I should really sell some stuff! Peter |

Very nice set, Peter. Very colorful boats and lot of detail! It seems the 28-135 works nicely on the A7r!

Thanks Kelly you're right, the lens works pretty well with the A7r; on this Spanish trip it was the only lens/camera I took with me. The lens is so good that I lost interest in any other zoom within that range; I think I already said that. I found it not so useful on the A700 (my first DSLR) but on the A900 it was back to it's familiar best. More recently, I tried it against a 24-70/2.8 ZA and apart from the MFD, preferred the Minolta. Same with the 16-35/2.8 ZA; I made the mistake of buying this lens (bad attack of GAS) but the Minolta walks all over it at 28-35mm and whilst the 16mm end is useful, I prefer the Minolta 21mm prime. I will dump the 16-35 and put the money towards the next camera.
BTW, I'm always astonished when I hear bad reports about the 28-135/4-4.5, I think there must simply be some well used or badly treated ones out there; at least I know mine has never been abused. On last month's Spanish excursion I used the Rokkors 21/2.8 and 35/1.8 pretty well exclusively but no boats I'm afraid. |

You are welcome, Peter. I've never owned that lens, so have no experience with it, though I've heard plenty of talk in regards to it. Seems like it might be quite large and heavy on the A7 series. What is it with Minolta lenses and color? Yes, some may not be near as sharp as the Sony Zeiss lenses, but the photos still have a nice quality to them. My 24-50mm f4 has the worrisome wiggle in the barrel, but the results are still nice -- at least think so. I also have the 24-105 which I purchased new for my Dynax 7 but have not used it much with digital. Have the 28-85 (original ver.) and the 35-105 (original) but also have not used them with digital. I've used the KM 17-35 and 28-75 plenty with my old KM7D and my A99. Still finding using big lenses with the LE-EA4 awkward on the A7. Just don't feel right. I also have not tried my Rokkor 21mm yet on my A7. How were your results? Have you posted any samples? Guess I better check for a samples page.
Regards, Kelly |
