I have recently upgraded to an A99ii, which rapidly became my favourite, most used and hence my prime choice. However, I still use my A77 a lot when the crop factor is useful or I want to use my APS lenses. My A58 also get a fair bit of use with a hyperzoom as my go to holiday snapshot camera. However, my A900 gets little use these days - but it is, in many ways my main backup to the A99ii - I guess the idea of a backup is that it only gets used in an emergency.
So I voted for all three ![]() |

I've kept my A68 after upgrading to the A7ii, so technically it's my backup camera.

Still shooting with A700 x 2 supplemented with an RX100II. I have an A200 which gets used as well, but in its own right, not as a backup. It takes magnificent images with Minolta lenses, no idea why, it just does.

After my A7ii (main camera) I have a Nex6 which is occasionally used as a backup, but more normally use other camera mounts. These include µ4/3 (normal & IR cameras) Pentax DSLRs, Sigma DSLRs, and some of my film bodies may see usage again too...

When I buy a new(er) camera I always try to sell my older camera.
At this moment I'm using an A7iii, but thinking about a A7Rii as a backup. But do hobby photographers need a back-up? |

'need' is a fascinating word! At the moment I chose not to use a back-up camera but I have done in the past but normally to keep two lenses at the ready in the field. I also treat my ex-camera as part of the funding of the next one as I prefer to keep minimal kit these days. Edited by dCap - 28 December 2020 at 22:06 |

I guess that depends on "WHAT" you're backing up and "WHY" you're backing it up. For me it's "redundant depth". I have invested in a form factor and mount I like. I was able to source NOS A-Mount equipment at a deep discount as a hedge against acquiring replacements in the future. |

When you are at the Seljalandsfoss in Iceland, when you are at Bryce Canyon in the USA or at the Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar - you want to have a working camera and lens with you. |

My A77 is my main camera. I don't really have a back up camera. I suppose in an emergency my back up would be my phone or my old Olympus OM1 film camera.

The 'car camera' is now a Nex-5t I picked up for under $125, with bargain 16-50 kit zoom and adaptators. For a camera with decent sensor, tilt touchscreen and USB charging the field is small in my budget, this will do quite nicely

I've said my A7m2 is my primary & A6000 is my secondary, but on another day it could be the other way round, it all depends on the mood I'm in !

But recently I bought a second hand A7Rii, but now it is difficult to choose which one is the backup: A7iii or A7Rii... ![]() ![]() |
