Summer school holidays, so off to the Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary outside Melbourne with my daughter and grandkids. With the devastating fires ablaze across Australia it was a relief to see native animals in a safe and unspoiled natural environment.
I'll post progressively but here's a starter. All a99ii with SAL70400G2 SSM. C&C welcome. 1. ![]() 2. Basically asleep all day and active at night. ![]() 3. ![]() 4. ![]() 5. The critically endangered Helmeted Honey-eater is Victoria's official bird emblem, and exists only in a tiny population in a remote nature preserve that hopefully hasn't been affected by the ferocious bush-fires. It is being captive bred successfully at Healesville and the numbers are building to the point when a planned release into the wild isn't too far off. A very beautiful bird with those feathered tufts on the side of its head. ![]() 6. ![]() More to follow... |

I can imagine that was a special experience under the devastating circumstances.
A very nice series so far. #3 would have been my favourite if the focus had been just a bit further (on the closed eye). I love the #1 portrait and the honey eaters a lot as well. TFS and keep them coming! |

Thanks for the feedback.
Continuing on: 7. Very slow shutter, very dim light = an impressionistic shot of a diving platypus. ![]() 8. This time more static on the surface, but still blurry. ![]() 9. Keeper's talk with a 17 year old male that was rescued from his burrow that was unearthed by a farmer digging a dam. The mother abandoned the site and the offspring so he was land reared at Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary. Apparently playful, loves human contact (with familiar keepers), including being patted and scratched behind his head. ![]() 10. A healthy pack of Tasmanian Devils lives and breeds at Healesville. The wild population in parts of Tasmania has been decimated by a cancerous facial tumor that seems to have arisen from the very small gene pool and cross infection through biting. Some of these healthy ones will be released to the Tasmanian wild in quarantined and isolated areas. ![]() 11. Cooling off in the 30 degree C heat. ![]() 12. Bone cracking teeth and jaws. ![]() More following,,, |

![]() 14. This and the next two from a live flight demonstration and talk with the keepers. ![]() 15. ![]() 16. ![]() 17. And this and the next few from a walk through aviary. ![]() 18. The natural habitat of this Glossy Black Cockatoo has been decimated in the recent fires and there are fears about its survival in the wild. ![]() 19. Same applies to the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. ![]() 20. ![]() 21. This bird is also known as the Thick-knee. ![]() More following. |

22. Regent parrot in the walk through aviary.
![]() 23. ![]() 24. In the reptile and amphibian house. ![]() 25. A special walk through aviary, home to this 3 year old male lyrebird and others. His distinctive display feathers are starting to grow. ![]() 26. ![]() 27. Co-tenants in the lyrebird aviary. ![]() 28. ![]() That's all from this visit. It's reassuring that there are endangered species being captive bred at places like this, for future release into the wild when safe and sustainable natural environs have grown back and become viable. |
