compared to:Sigma 70-300 APO
Minolta 100-300 APO
Tokina 24-200 ATX
Sigma 70-200 f/2.8
price paid:240.00 USD (used)
positive:Fast aperture at the wide end.
Solid "old school" type of construction.
Focus limit switch helps AF performance.
Bokeh is nice.
Works with Minolta and Sony D-SLR's.
negative:Prone to CA below f/8.0 across zoom range. APO should have helped prevent this.
Zoom creep anytime lens is below horizontal.
Not as sharp as other APO type lens.
comment:I have the "Vivitar Series 1" version of this lens.
The construction is solid Metal and poly carb with a nice heft and sturdy feeling. For a f/2.8 lens, the front objective is smaller than expected at 62mm (though this does help keep filter cost down). The zoom is old school push pull type and offers quick transition up and down the scale. Unfortunately, this type of zoom is also prone to zoom creep and this lens is no exception. Anything below horizontal will require a steadying hand to prevent the focal length from changing.

Focus is fairly fast for this age lens and as accurate as the camera is. The limit switch helps and keeps the lens from searching to much. A 1:2.5 macro is also nice though only available at the long end of the scale.

For the price, the specs make this a very tempting lens, unfortunately the performance does not live up to the promise. There is noticeable CA below f/8.0 at all focal lengths. With this being an APO type lens, this is very disappointing as I expected this to help calm the CA.

Optical performance falls way behind the lens I compared it to. The colors are good and the contrast is acceptable but sharpness is another matter. This lens is softer across the range compared even to the sigma 70-300. Stopping down below f/8.0 helps some but bottom line is the sharpness just isn't there.

Razor sharp even @F3,5
Built like a tank
negative:Push-Pull zoom
Litle purple fringing
comment:For me a bargan, verry cheap lens with verry good preformance.
This lens realy suprised me, its razor sharp from 70-210mm. Nice bouquet. No distorion detected, just a little purple fringing in hard coditions. The AF works fine with my A100, although it isn't the most quiet lens arround. In very poor light conditions the AF tends to hunt, but no more than can be expected.
The Macro @210mm is useable as long as you stay horizontal. The push-pull slides out when pointing down.

positive:Great for Close ups on Bugs x2.5
Nice Colour - Very Sharp @ 70mm & 200mm @ f8
negative:Push pull - slides out when you point down making bug work hard.
My copy not so sharp @ 100mm
comment:Useful cheap lens for the right occasion. Quite good @ low light concerts with high iso. Built like tank - If this was'nt a push-pull it would get taken out a lot more. Although photodo gives it a 2.9 rating I was still suprised it matched up so well against beercan even beating it in sharpness @ 70mm, although not so good just a little way up @ 100mm. Then sharp as a tack @ 210mm.
