negative:Not much--CA creeps in at times in high contrast situations, but PP easily takes care of that.
comment:Very little positive to add that hasn't already been said. The sharpness and clarity of images taken with this lens can be almost startling. At current prices, I am surprised that they aren't snapped up immediately!

positive:Low distortion, sharp across the frame. From f4, tack sharp across the frame, very high resolution. Great colors and contrast.
Not as large and heavy as a zoom 2.8 lens.
Built-in hood
negative:Chromatic aberrations and purple fringing
Hood doesn't lock when retracted.
Focus ring hidden by cover
Focus can be very slow
Expensive considering it is nearly 30 years old -- but worth it
comment:This lens makes me wish I could get away with shooting at 200mm all the time.
The lens is about the same size and weight as my beercan 70-210. So not exactly a petite lens, but manageable. Much smaller than a 70-200 2.8 lens would be.
Image quality is nearly perfect. The only complaint is some purple fringing, particularly wide open. Not as bad as the beercan, but definitely noticeable and definitely needs post-processing correction in some images.

The built-in hood is overall a nice feature. A nice big hood to eliminate flare. The minor quibble is that the hood doesn't lock when retracted, but a lens cap will keep it from creeping open. The other unusual thing about the build is that the manual focus ring is hidden behind a cover that needs to be slid open. On the positive side, it keeps you from accidentally changing the focus when handholding the lens. But on the downside, it adds an extra step to using manual focus or DMF.
Focus can be pretty slow on this original version of the lens, particularly if the focus wasn't already "close." But if you use the built in focus limiter (or the limiter on the A99), it does speed up the focus a lot.
Despite these complaints, I still need to rate the build quality as 5. My copy was a bit of a bargain price because the focus limiter knob is broken off. Yet, this 28 year old lens still actually works perfectly with totally solid build.

As a footnote, this lens does require very very careful micro adjustment if you intend to shoot wide open at 2.8. The Depth of field is just so incredibly narrow, that any error in focus will cost IQ. I had to try re-adjusting my microfocus 4 times before I was fully happy with the results.

positive:White magic! Purchase ex+ rated used from KEH. This white beast has been lusted over by me since the 80's and I finally own one. Woo hoo! Only an original 85 1.4 eludes me now!
negative:Clunky hood and manual focus ring cover....expensive. Can be a bit dreamy at times at F 2.8. Not bad, excellent actually but not perfect.
comment:Fast focusing rocket ship here took me a bit of time to get used to it actually especially at f 2.8. I often bag this together with my Maxxum 100 2.8 macro as a tele pair in my bag....little escapes those two.

positive:+ Small and light for the focal length
+ Built in hood
negative:- color fringing wide open
comment:I actually expected more from this lens based on the reviews here.
The sharpness wide open is NOT excellent. It is a little better than the 70-200 zooms, but not really by a lot. The lens of course shines from f/3.5-4 onward.
I like it's AF speed and the ability to use a 1.4x TC without much penalty on IQ, AF speed and F stop.
It's also a lot lighter and easier to carry around than a heavy 70-200. If I throw this, 135/2.8 and the 85/2.8 in my bag I'm better off in all regards.

negative:Annoying focus ring cover
Needs a grip for comfort
comment:I had to think about the negative points, you eventually get used to both of the ones I found and I ended up not even looking for the focus ring cover to use it after a while. It is heavy, so a grip would be useful, but the balance (or lack of it) isn't something too disturbing.

Overall, it might be the best lens I had the pleasure to use so far.

positive:+ Compact, built in hood

+ Beautiful colour
+ Sharp, usable wide open
+ Fast AF
negative:+ Despite APO, not immune to colour fringing
+ 200mm prime - I found not so useful
+ Highlights at f/2.8 in corners are clearly oval due to vignetting
comment:I loved the special look this lens gives, it reminds me of the CZ135. However, overall I find the CZ135 much more useful -- 135mm is just the right focal length for outdoor portraits, whereas I found 200mm too long. Also, the CZ135 has a much shorter MFD at 72cm vs 1.5m. So I ended up selling this lens to help fund the CZ135 purchase.

negative:purple fringing wide open

paint is fragile
comment:I sold my minolta 80-200/2.8 for this lens. Much smaller and lighter, with much improved handling. As a result, it gets used much more often. On a crop camera, sharpness is better at 2.8 compared to the zoom, but by f4 it is indistinguishable. Everything has pretty much been said on this lens, it is as good as advertised. However, it does have its share of optical flaws, namely purple fringing and bokeh CA at large fstops. Focus is fast on a700, yet i've seen some imprecisions in the focus, that may be due to the camera and not the lens. Also, the aperture is not round, but nine-sided, but this is nitpicking. This lens needs to be handled with care, as the paint chips off easily. There are also a lot of mobile elements to the lens body - focus ring cover and lens hood, this is somewhat disconcerting at first.
Overall, a great lens, highly recommended.

positive:Everything (well, almost)!
negative:Paint peels off

comment:Color is perfect.

Bokeh is beatiful.

Distortion: none that i'm aware (no rigorous test).

Flare: none that i had noticed so far.

Sharpness: perfect even wide open. Just a bit of CA and lower contrast, but nothing to worry about.

Focus: fast and precise. The adjustable limiter is very useful. Focuses well even with the 2X TC (1st version), though it micro-hunts if the subject has low contrast.

Build is great. compact, relatively light, resistant, balances well. Still, this is the only aspect in which i found some minor flaws:
- Hood doesn't lock when retracted - but normally that's when i'm using the front cover, so not important. Largely compensated by the fact that the hood is built in!
- Focus ring cover could lock better. Not important.
- Paint comes off real easy. I can scratch my copy with a fingernail. As some have said it's not so, there must be sample variations. This is a purely cosmetic issue.

This lens is so sharp it can be used even wide open with the Minolta APO TC 2X - but then it shows CA in contrasty scenes. Still better than the 500 F8 (unless for CA, of course, since the 500 has none).

This is by far the best lens i ever used. If you can get one, don't think twice!

comment:This is an outstanding lens. It is nice and small, yet the build is professional. It is super sharp, and the bokeh is great. It has that Minolta G look to the photos, which is hard to describe, just like my 85 G D. A little bit of CA wide open, but not too bad. I have never tried the HS version, but I find that the autofocus is pretty quick for the "slow" version. You can't go wrong with this lens.

comment:A lens I always carry with me, and use more than my beercan.

Great combined with the a200 and vertical grip for improved weight balance.
One issue would be that you look very pro, and people around you will notice you (hey, at least they avoid standing in your way!).

Great build, the 4 is for the hood that can't be blocked when retracted and the rotating focusing ring.

Besides that, it's a great value for your money. I've used it mostly for architecture and landscape, also some portraits but 200mm is not my favorite focal length for this use.

Unusual flare and distortion are absent.

2017 comment: after year of owning this lens, the paint didn't seem to flake any more that it was when I bought it. While I don't often carry this lens, I still value this telephoto lens for its compactness & stellar image quality.

It provides very pleasing results - smooth, clear, natural images (something more aesthetic than just plain sharp - the Minolta look?). Focus is snappy and image performance stellar on a700 and a850, and well balanced to carry around in the hand. I wish the hood would not wobble when retracted; that's my only gripe (I've been told by a forum member that you can reverse it and lock it in place but I couldn't do this with mine).

It's worth considering whether you would prefer the flexibility of a zoom vs the small size, large aperture but fixed length of this lens; I guess that applies to any prime lens. I don't think you'd find a better result than from this lens. I feel I can completely trust the results it provides. I don't use it tons, but it would be hard to part with it.

comment:I have given this a testing in testing conditions and it is just an outstanding lens. Only one I have come across that rivals the macro for sharpness.
The results are such that I will have no qualms about using a 1.4X TC on it ( if I can get one ) and it will fill a prime gap.
An additional bonus is that it is easily hand-holdable and given its speed one does not have to worry too much about shutter speed ( within reason ) all of which really suits my style of shooting.
If I have to have a quibble it is that the hood in the retracted position is not securable and wobbles about a bit but the answer is to leave it extended ( except of course with a CPL on ). A further very, very minor quibble is that the focus ring cover is a touch flimsy. Neither are material enough to give it a mark down though.

Did I say it was an exceptional lens ?

Have subsequently added a 1.4X TC and any detrimental effects are absolutely minimal - a very useful addition which gives TWO great lenses so get one if you can.

( PS - the "white" is a matter of taste - makes you look professional ;-) )

comment:It's all been said before my review. This one and the updated HS are Minolta classics and best in class. What I like best besides the IQ is that it is a much lighter lens than the 80-200 G. IQ is still superb with the 1.4x APO TC and this is a potent little pair when combined.

Focus is fast enough - not quite as torquey as the HS lenses, but no slouch. If it's small that you want, or you can't stomach the price of the 80-200 or SSM, then this is the go to 200mm lens for you.

Its the sharpest of all my lens, with great resolution, works nicely with minolta dedicated teleconverter, giving you the option of a cheap 400mm lens.

comment:I've owned this for some time, originally to use on a 9xi and now on a Sony A100, top notch performance. Bought used in great condition for about half it's original cost (I got my 9xi mint in box for a third its original price) about seven years ago. I've used Minolta from the 7000i onwards, untill I got fed up waiting for a digital version and went with Canon.

Update: continues service on my a900. Still have Canon gear as well. But I think the a900 is one of the best cameras I've ever owned.
