positive:Solidly built, small, sharp., Minolta
negative:Lacks modern flare control and microcontrast.
comment:I have this design in the original and RS versions - there is little to choose between them. So little that I am copying my review of the RS here.

The RS has a slightly more user friendly focus ring and a smoother aperture which alters the bokeh a little not so good for stars, better for circular blobs (a good excuse for having both versions?). To be honest I tend to use them stopped down for architectural shots or landscapes with lots of DOF - where bokeh tends to be irrelevant.

The body of the lens is essentially that of the 24/2.8, 28/2.8, 50/1.7, 50/1.4 with an additional flared out end for the big front element. This makes it distinctly wider and knocks the filter size up to 72mm.

Ratings:
Sharpness is good, not quite up to full marks but as good as might be expected from a decent prime.
Colour is typical Minolta - love it or hate it.
Build is solid, as proved by the fact that there are still plenty around still going strong after 20+ years.
Some distortion is to be expected from a lens this wide, but Minolta did a pretty good job at squaring things up and Lightroom has a profile to correct it. Nevertheless you can still get those spectacular distortions by angling it appropriately.
Flare - not its strong point, but not unusually poor for a lens this wide and this old.

Overall I like this lens a lot, though it did take some getting used to on FF. It is still a nice lens on APS, but is not so much better than the 18-55 SAM II and no better than the 16-50/2.8 - FF is where it really shines.

If I had to choose between the two versions I would go for the RS because of the slightly more user friendly manual focus.

comment:I was searching for some extra wide angel for my city trips because 24mm is something just not wide enough .
First i wanted to buy a new Tamron SP 15-30/2.8 , but to big and heavy .
I found a 2nd hand Minolta 20/2.8 first version build between '86-'93 .
I have to say that this lens surprised me .
Although it's between 25-33 years old and made for analoge photography it performs surprisingly well on my A99II 42mp .
Better than i hoped for .
I normaly use this lens at 8-11 and when you use this
http://kurtmunger.com/short_focusid242.html
the lens even performs very good in the extreem corners !
I am very happy with this investment and can recommand it to everyone who is looking for some compact and light wide angel that give you that extra mm .

positive:Nice and wide, super sharp in the centre and corners are OK on my A99 even at f/2.8 but perfect across the frame once stopped down to f/5.6 or f/8. Lovely colours. Focuses accurately on A99. On A57 its similar story, apart from crop factor. Infinity at the stop. Built to last.
negative:Some vignetting wide open, the lens hood is a bit tricky to remove or fit sometimes, wide open there is a bit of astigmatism and coma shooting milky way.
comment:A really nice wide angle lens, performs very well on my A99, great sharpness corner to corner at f/8, corners are softer at f/2.8 but still acceptable, but from f/4 to f/8 corners are great. Lovely Minolta colours. Solidly built and compact. To get infinity focus at night and during the day I just flip the A99 into manual and turn the focus ring to the stop - perfect!

comment:After selling my first copy, I bought a second. The second copy is the sharpest one yet--sharper than my RS.

This is a fairly small lens, though much larger than the Minolta AF 24/2.8 and 28/2.8 primes. It looks a bit like a wide converter was added to the front of those lenses. The bayonet hood looks just like a scaled up version of the 24/2.8 hood. Like the 28/2.8 this lens is supported by in-body lens compensations. "JAPAN"

This second example is pretty sharp wide-open. There is also little distortion and pretty flat focus plane.

positive:Compact and light. 72mm filter ring. minimum focus distance (compared to the zooms)
negative:No real issues. Marked vignetting when standard circular polariser attached. (a low profile filter would be a better option).
comment:I bought this lens to expand my Minolta AF lens collection, and to take advantage of the non rotating front element when using filters. I already have a number of 72mm filters.

I'm delighted with It's compact size and weight.

Optically it's a fine lens. The distortions are quite complex, and care needs to be taken when doing architectural images. These are not really noticeable in most other situations and are part of the character of images made with this type of lens.

I find vignetting is not a problem when using the standard Lee filter ring adapter (a low profile type would probably be better but not absolutely necessary).

I doubt if there would be much advantage over the Sony 16-50 f2.8 on my A77 and have not tried it out.

Some previous reviews have remarked the AF is noisy. I don't think so.

I was expecting to see an improvement in IQ over the Tokina zoom and was not disappointed, but a prime lens ought to be better than a zoom in any case. (The SAL 16-50 is a much younger lens specifically designed for the the A77 APS-c sensor).

You can see examples of my images with all my reviewed lenses here. www.flickr.com/photos/marti-thinkso/

Came with a nice Minolta branded AC CLR filter attached.

positive:Beautifully built. One fingertip manual focus when you want to use it that way. Ultra fast AF. This latest copy I have fount is ultra sharp for a super wide.
negative:There was obviously some production variance as mu current copy is the sharpest that I have come across buy quite a margin.
Super shiny finish looks naff.
comment:If you have a full frame Sony you should own this lens. It works on E-mount with the LA-EA4 brilliantly. As a manual focus lens it is a delight ( one finger focus ) with the LA-EA3 and it's brilliant on the A-mount cameras. Very fast focus, manual or auto. Or set to f8 and don't focus at all. It's all good. Great colours and very sharp for a super wide angle. Generally makes great looking images.
WATCH OUT. Some are not as sharp as others.

comment:This is the lens that I use 80% of the time on my 7D. I bought it at a discount because of a rattling noise. It was very easy to repair. One of the focus guide screws had come out.

+
Color and sharpness is very good. Lowlight performance is great. Sharpness is good at f/2.8 and tack sharp everywhere else.

-
In a forest or overcast sky situation, the lens can render flat images, hence my color rating of 4. If there are straight lines near the edges of a shot, they will be slightly curved. These are things I can work around.

You may find this lens slightly too wide for everyday use. However, I do a lot of landscapes and architecture, for which I find 20mm perfect (30mm eq. APS-C). It also makes some great wide angle macros. The min focus distance is about 10 cm in practice. You'll get the most out of this focal length by getting really close to your subject.

Compared to others:
The Sigma 10-20 is garbage. Sharpness is terrible until f/8 or 9. I started with the Sigma, sold it, and bought the Minolta.
I also sold my Minolta 28 f/2.8 some time after acquiring the 20. I just didn't use it much any more and it was not tack sharp like the 20.

positive:- great center sharpness at 2.8
negative:- Vignetting (as expected)
comment:What a catch! I always wanted a nice AF prime lens for FF but couldn't afford really the Sigma 20 1.8. I guess all my needs at wide end are now fulfilled.

Center sharpness is great at 2.8 which makes this lens a great portrait lens, too. Sharpness gets, of course, better across the whole frame stopped down, but I shoot events and portraits so I don't bother with tack sharpness in the corners.

Vignetting is *very* present at 2.8 and vanishes around 5.6, but can easily be removed if you need the open aperture. Putting a narrow 72mm filter on top does not make things worse as vignetting is prominent, anyway. But for portraits, again, the vignetting is ok.

Contrast and colors are "so Minolta", that's why you got to love this lens.

comment:My first impression was not so good, but after some real use I started to like it very much.

I like the drawing style and the bokeh of the lens, and the fact that in real life situations it doesn't show that much distortion.

The lens is IMHO sharp, but it lacks some microcontrast to help in the sharpness aspect.

I mainly use it on an A700 but I have tested it on film.

comment:This is a great alternative to a 24mm.

I got this lens quite by chance (I wasn't looking for one at the time ...) and it has been quite a useful little optic.

It is sharp wide open (not absolutely perfect - but close enough hence 4.5).

Distortion control is pretty good for a super-wide, not as good as the Zeiss 16-35, but it's not in the same price bracket!

Overall, I'd be pleased to recommend this lens - get one if you can find one at the right price!

comment:I purchased this fine lens in EX condition and I find that it performs very well indeed. On my A850 it fills my need for a fine, ultra-wide lens. Highly recommended.

price paid:275 USD (used)
positive:* good sharpness wide open
* Minolta colors
* focuses quickly
* small, lightweight
negative:* significant vignetting at f/2.8
* f/2.8 is not fast enough for low-light work
* there are more versatile options for APS-C landscape shots
* focal plane shifts at medium apertures - lens can be slightly sharper when manually focused at/around f/5.6
comment:If you want a full-frame prime for landscapes, this is a great option. You get classic Minolta colors, sharp images at all apertures, and the rock-solid build that lenses from its era are known for. Colors are better than Sigma's wide-angle primes, more saturated and not as yellow. Also, when compared to the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 and 24mm f/1.8, the Minolta focuses MUCH faster; it's not a big deal if you're shooting landscapes, but it makes a difference when you're shooting moving subjects.

This lens is not without its flaws. F/2.8 is not a fast enough aperture for low light work, so don't expect to use this lens in the same way you use an f/1.X prime. In addition, if you use this lens on an a850/a900 and shoot at f/2.8, the vignetting is pretty noticeable (though it's not hard to correct in post). Finally, it's hard to recommend this lens to those who plan on using it mostly/exclusively for landscape shots on an APS-C body. Stop any decent-quality zoom lens down to f/8 or f/11 and you should get excellent image quality, corner to corner. Why spend a few hundred dollars on this lens when you could spend a bit more, pick up a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, and get both comparable image quality at 20mm f/8 and the utility of a zoom lens? Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic piece of glass - all I'm saying is that for APS-C shooters, you can kill two birds with one stone with other lenses.

comment:I have added this lens to my new A850 gear to have something wider than my 28-75 Kit lens.

Very nice, very sharp, even wide open. I did some test sheet shooting. Corners are perfect.

Works well on FF, with some light vignetting. Can be corrected with the DxO V2.6 Elite which is bundled to the A850 Kit, very easy.

Great Colour
72mm filter size
negative:Bokeh sometimes
comment:This is a really great lens. Wide open, the corners and edges can be a bit soft and the bokeh can be onion-like. But this is minor. There is (obviously) distortion but that goes with the territory. It's a sharp lens and quite flare-resistant and CA-resistant. Colour is very nice. Focusses fast and quite quietly. 72mm filter size is practical (nice complement to the 28-135 out in the field). Solid build.

It's a great alternative to a large and heavy (and expensive) ultra-wide zoom. You can easily throw it in your bag. I also find the shooting experience with a wide prime a simpler process. I more easily foresee how a scene will look. Recommended for the a850/900.

comment:I bought this a few months ago and only just got round to using it. I really like it. It's a lot like my previous Minolta primes (24/2.8 and 50/1.7) it's light, compact and performs very well.

I had wanted something wider than my CZ 24-80 for a while, though as it will only be used occasionally couldn't justify spending a lot of money. This little lens fits the bill nicely!

positive:Without a doubt one of favourite primes - I never go anywhere without it. Very sharp from F2.8, quick focusing, great colour, very well engineered. Very low distortion if used properly. A very good street lens on a crop body.
negative:Aside from the fact that you need to replace the hood with a collapsible rubber hood right from the start - there are no negatives.
comment:This is one of my "magic" lenses - it never fails to deliver. It is among my top five favourite lenses of all time - one that I would be very saddened to lose. I have had it since new, mid eighties, and it has never let me down. It has performed well on Minolta 5000, 7000, 9000, and my Sony A100 and A700. It is brilliant on an A900.
