ownership:I own this lens
compared to:Minolta 50/1.7
Minolta 28-85 AF Macro
Minolta 70-210 /4.0 Beercan
price paid:235 USD (used - KEH)
positive:tack-sharp throughout focal range
Nice range - great alternative to the Sony kit lens
negative:None so far! Would give it "all 5s" but I cannot say the build is quite up to the heavy metal beercan
comment:Have only had it for a couple of days but am so far totally impressed. Visually, my first impression out of the box, the lens was stunning -- seeing that relatively HUGE 62mm diameter front glass. From there it only got better!

Using it with the Sony a700 body (purchased a couple of months ago), I had initially bought the older Minota 28-85 as a "kit lens alternative" and was really disappointed with THAT lens (CA was unacceptably pronounced w/the 28-85, especially at widest zoom/aperature) -- so, upon arrival, I immediately tested THIS lens for that problem and am happy to say that CA is practically non-existant, even at the extremes of focal length and aperature! ... Am totally impressed with the sharpness throughout the zoom range, even wide open ... And the extra range (over the 28-85 makes) it a great walkabout lens.

On the purchase, I spent some time shopping eBay, then finally ordered from KEH.com (EX+ rated lens w/caps & hood) for $235 USD. Two-day air shipment within the US brought it to $249 total. I highly recommend this retailer. The lens is in absolutely flawless condition, has 60-day return warranty, and arrived as promised in 2 days! Much better than an eBay gamble.

With the extra reach of this lens and the much improved IQ/CA issue (over the 28-85) I will be using the beercan less. Love my beercan, but have CA issues with it unless stopped down.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a relatively inexpensive QUALITY alternative to the plastic kit lens with a new Sony Alpha, this is really a VERY nice option to consider. IMHO, the IQ and sharpness equals that of the 50mm 1.7 prime, with smoother bokeh.
