positive: | Very compact and lightweight lens. Very good center sharpness, nice color and contrast. Acceptable distortion and flare control. Very cheap for the useful focal range zoom lens and fix aparture. |
negative: | Average build quality. Feel all parts loose. Very soft around edge over whole focal range that cannot be solved by closing aparture. Also soft over whole frame at 50mm. |
comment: | Very cheap wide-normal zoom lens with very nice color rendering and good center sharpness even wide open except at 50mm (of course you need to do micro adjustment). Also it's small and light even with LA4 adapter, can bring it everywhere without hesitance. The bad things: edge softness over whole focal range (I rated 4.5 sharpness for center at 24-35, for edge sharpness probably just 3), softness at around 50mm Build quality is not so good but it' fine. The biggest issue for me is micro adjustment is not same for all focal length. For -5, AF works well from 24-35mm but totally out of focus at 50mm. So I always use it for only 24-35mm focal length. Overral, image quality/price is excellent, especially for one who needs 24-35mm, low price, light lens. If you need only 24mm FL, I think it's better to save little more money for fix 24f2.8. |

positive: | Compact and sharp Better focusing ring |
negative: | Hood is useless Rotating front elment during focusing Becomes 36-75 on DSLR |
comment: | This is supposed to be the sharpest AF 24-50 lens. The MD verions of this lens has great reputation, the AF version is good and has good distortion control. On digital it is quite limited only 36-75mm The RS version has better focusing ring but the annyoing part is the rotating front make using polorzier filter tricky. Based on my tests its performance is about the same as the 24-85/24-105 so if you need a zoom starting from 24, the other 2 is a better choice. |

positive: | Sharpness good, colour excellent. Suitable as a general outdoor walkaround lens (effectively 35-70) as not too heavy but with a useful "normal" (ie semi wide to short tele) range. Useful close focusing depth of 30cm. |
negative: | Filter ring rotates during focusing. I tend to use MF when using graduated Cokin filters, getting the focus right and then rotating the filter mount to suit. |
comment: | This is a good walk around lens with it's sharpness and colour rendition. While I generally leave the Minolta 28-135 on as my walk around lens because of the extra versatility, the extra weight of that lens can be a bit of a pain at times. I like this lens for contrasty / shadowy light areas as it is less prone to underexpose than the 28-135. I've had no problem with flare, perhaps this is a problem on the earlier version. I've given the build a "4" only because it is plastic, I prefer the old all metal lenses, apart from it's construction material it's fine. |
