positive:Great IQ. Surprisingly useful range even on APS.
negative:A bit weighty, but the real problem is that it's an xi powerzoom.
comment:This is a very competent performer, sharp, great zoom range on FF, okay on APS - the optics are a good as they get on the lower-mid cost Minolta zooms. The downside is, of course, that it is an xi powerzoom - I have a soft spot for the xi lenses as witnesses to a Minolta innovation that didn't pay off - though we do have powerzooms on E mount nowadays it is still not a market grabbing feature.
For those unaware the xi zooms do not have a conventional manual twist or push-pull zoom action, instead they have a control ring around the lens that you rotate a few degrees to zoom. The lens ring engages gearing within the lens to connect the camera's focusing motor to the zooming mechanism and tells the motor to turn. Manual focusing is also motor driven (pull the zoom ring back and rotate) and extremely cumbersome. xi mechanisms are prone to failure, these are not the most reliable lenses though my copy works well. This is why I give the lens 3 for build rating - in other respects it is a well made, solid lens.
I have already reviewed this lens' conventional brother, which offers all the optical quality with none of the xi issues - given that they sell for much the same price I cannot recommend the xi version even though it is in all other respects an excellent lens (my copy is marginally sharper than my non-xi version) and has a focus hold button (unlike the manual zooms).
However, if you fancy trying a powerzoom then this is the one to go for (but don't buy if it is not clearly stated that it is in full working order - assume 'untested' means 'broken').

comment:This lens ostensibly replaced both the 28-85 F3.5-4.5 and the 35-105 3.5-4.5, but Minolta released a cosmetically updated 28-85 in the following year, while taking three more years to release the non-xi 28-105. "JAPAN"

The Xi lens performs optically just like the later non-Xi versions. If you don't mind the quirks of the power zoom Xi series, this might be an inexpensive alternative.

The AF and power zoom are a bit unreliable on the 600si. The electronic focus compensation for zooming doesn't seem to work on the 600si, but it works fine on the A68. Focus peaking is enabled on the A68 when using the powered focus-by-wire manual focus.

The large amount of focus shifting while zooming from the varifocal design makes the zoom rather useless for video. The lens is electronically compensated by some bodies, but the automatic focus adjustment is made after the zoom is finished. The lens can focus twice as close at the wide end as at the long end.

compared to:Sony kit 18-55 : way better
Minolta 35-70 3.5/4.5 : i think the 35-70 is a bit better and certainly easier to use
price paid:50 Euros
positive:great image quality
colors
sharpness
negative:manual focus is complicated and slow ( motorised )
Took me a while to figure out how it works.
Gets out of focus while zooming in automatic mode
comment:Much better than the kit 18-55 mm - no comparaison as far as image quality is concerned.
I would not recommend this lens for filming wildlife though, unless you use it in perfect light conditions.
Otherwise, the manual focus is just too complicated ( if you want to follow a flock of birds for instance ).
So, i'd say excellent as an all-rounder for shooting pics and just ok for video in broad daylight at a steady range.
And don't use the zoom while filming because focus just stops ( i mean it it's completely out of focus) for as long as you activate the zoom )

positive:Good range
Sharper than expected
Reasonable minimum focus distance when compared to 1st generation AF lenses.
Very good build quality.
negative:Noisy
Lack of Focal length info on digital bodies.
Some minor CA
Unusual filter size for A-mount lenses
comment:I can't remember how I acquired this lens. I know I did not buy it specifically and it was included with a film body that I bought via ebay. Probably a 700si I think.

It's certainly a quirky lens and the auto-zoom takes some adjusting to. However I have found this lens a pleasant surprise when IQ is concerned in certain situations. I think it suffers from less CA than the 28-135 and definitely less than the original 28-85, but doesn't touch my original 35-105 in sharpness and colour.

To get the best out of this lens a lens hood is essential and don't expect great sharpness and contrast wide open. But outdoors on a bright day I think this lens produces better pictures than my 28-135. However, for me this lens seems to work really well when I'm shooting B&W film outdoors. I don't know why but it seems to produce very sharp contrasty images that I don't get when shooting colour on a digital body.

Considering the low price of this lens it's definitely worth a go.

negative:Heavy
On APS-C 28 is simply not wide enough for all purposes
Not good for quasi-macro shots
No MF (I have yet to find a way)
comment:I had reservations about the XI, but I am very happy I got it. I love the auto zoom and it has not effected battery life as much as I expected.

This is a great walk around zoom lens that covers the middle rage. Goes great with a dedicated wide angle and a dedicated telephoto.

The detail is not perfect unless you stop it up, but its good enough for capturing the moment, even in lower light without a flash. In bright light, even when stopped up, the contrast seems to be higher than other lenses.

I have found that the lens does not flare very easily, but when it does, its ugly flare.

I would recommend this is a great value for a lens to carry around for general purposes.

negative:Power zoom could be a plus or a minus.
comment:I wasn't too impressed until I made a point of stopping it down a bit. I think it has a pleasant look.

Bokeh is not too smooth, but I like the interesting look.

I did not do detailed comparison tests, just viewing photos subjectively. There seems to be plenty of detail, particularly stepped down (say, from f5.6 to f8), but for sheer image quality, I feel like I'm better off with the Tamron (which not only is more sharp, but at a faster aperture). I feel like I shouldn't like the 28-105xi, but it doesn't seem so bad. It's sharp enough to see individual hairs and eyelashes, so I don't know what I'd need with more sharpness.

Today, I took a number of photos at f6.3, and am pleased. Looks good even at the edges at 105mm.

On a budget, not only could you do a lot worse, I submit you could not do better for $19.

[update] The lens is worse at 28mm, but I'm pretty happy with it at the longer focal lengths. At f8, I've gotten really pleasant results (if imperfect), even at wider angles. As they say, a lot of cheap lenses look good at f8....

compared to:28-105mm f3.5-4.5 (non-xi)
price paid:Ł90 with big beercan
positive:Good centre sharpness throughout.
Good colours.
Solid build.
negative:Soft edges at wide end of zoom.
Reports wrong focal length at 105mm.
Manual zoom is poorly damped.
comment:I recently picked up a non-xi version of this lens on ebay, then when this one turned up with a big beercan and a couple of camera bodies I got it as well. So I can do a direct comparison between the two.
The autozoom works really well, although it's not particularly quiet.
Switching to manual zoom is accomplished by flicking a switch on the lens. This works but it's very poorly damped and of use only for older cameras like the 7000.
Autofocus is pretty quick and precise on my A100.
There are 8 contacts but I don't know if that means ADI metering will work. Setting my A100 to ADI and trying different distances and apertures with the onboard flash all exposed the same so I presume ADI works ok.
Compared to the non-xi version it is quite similar in performance but there are optical differences:
At all focal lengths and apertures centre sharpness is excellent. The non-xi version needs to be stopped down a bit for best results.
Wide open, there is substantial tail off in sharpness and CA towards the edges, and the non-xi is better in this respect. Remember, these were tested on my A100 with cropped sensor so on FF this tail off would probably be worse.
Stopped down to f8, it's still quite soft at 28mm at the edges and still shows some CA.
Go up through the zoom range though and edge sharpness improves and is much better towards 105mm.
Oddly, at 105mm the exif data wrongly reports the lens as being at 55mm, although other focal lengths are reported correctly.
If I had only got this lens and not the non-xi version as well, then I would probably have been happy with it. But for me, the loss of edge sharpness especially at the wide angle end is not made up for by the excellent centre definition. I get the feeling also that the build quality of the non-xi version is a little better, although the xi is not bad.
Both are very nice lenses, but the non-xi version is what will stay in my camera bag.

positive:Good Build Quality
Reasonable Sharpness
Good Color
Auto Zoom feature is effective for quick shots.
Good Value for features.
negative:Manual Focus is clumsy and inexact.
A bit large and thick.
May deplete battery quicker.
Rubber rings seem to fade and get chalky.
comment:I have switched back and forth between this 28-105 xi lens and the others noted above for everyday use This lens is actually one that came with my old Minolta 7xi, and it's usefulness on my A-100 Sony is a pleasant surprise (if I did not have one I would snag one on Ebay, since they sell at bargain prices). The sharpness is good, color seems nice, and overall quality of the lens is quite decent and omparable to most older Minolta lenses. I am one who actually loves the Xi power zoom feature for quick composition and ease of use. There are detractors who do not like the Xi lenses and power zoom, but I think that they are fun and useful.

positive:- Sharp in all the range
- It to great fun to zoom electronically
negative:- Battery life shorter
- Tends to flare useless hood
- Manual focussing is odd
comment:This lens is a bit under-appreciated. It is rather sharp even wide open, although at 105mm you need to stop down a little bit. The colors are very Minoltian in other word fantastic. It has better colors and it is sharper than the kit lens and it is on level of the KM28-85. The range till 105mm is great although I often work in the 18-30mm range. Flare control is horrible and the hood is useless.
It is a dream to zoom with this one but to focus it is a nightmare.

comment:(some background info) I didnt want to get the kit lens as I was told that my order for the tamron 17-50 will arrive around the same time that I expected the A100 body. Which it didnt so I found this lens for a ok price.

When I firstly tried the lens I found that it loves taking portrait shots. 9/10 portraits Ive taken came out perfect and for that Im glad I have this lens.

The lens itself seems to be of solid build, the zoom motor can be noisy and sometimes when zooming very slowly there are grinding noises! :/ Overall the powerzoom isnt that bad.

Manual zoom is ok, sometimes a bit too hard to get going from 28.
What Ive found is that the manual focus (which is on the same ring except once the ring is pulled back some 1/2 cm) is very slow to use and also can freeze the camera functions if left in manual focusing mode. eg. menu modes, or function mode rotating the dial or trying to select anything.

Overall its a decent portrait lens and the power zoom isnt such a bad thing either.

positive:Images are sharp and colors pleasing. I still say auto-zoom is not a bad thing. Hefty build.
negative:Need to stop down to 4.5 at the wide end and 5.6 at the long end.
comment:I think this is a nice lens. The build quality is good, or at least it's heavy probably because of the AZ motor so it feels like it's built to last. Compared to the 28-80's this might be a more useful range to compliment a kit 18-70, or if you don't have the kit and don't see the need for a wide angle lens.

negative:Not good to use if the light is so low, that you'll have to focus manually.
comment:This is an underrated lens!
I've owned this one since 1992, when I bought it for my 7xi.
Nowadays I find myself using it more and more often as my walk-around lens - and the results are very satisfying. Give it a try - it's cheap.
Motorzoom is ok - motorfocus is not, but AF is ok, so you'll probably not have to use MF.
Edit 11/07: Very fine on the A700 too. Fast focus - good for portraits too.

positive:Good range of zoom, sharpness is better than average.
negative:Power zoom can drain take its toll on the battery. Irritating if it decides to zoom out when you don't want it to (happens more on film cameras). If dirt gets into the zoom control ring it becomes difficult to use.
comment:I tended to leave this on my film cameras most of the time and now it's the lens I pick up for medium/wide angle work. Trouble is, on the A100, it's not quite wide enough.

comment:This was the lens that came with my 7xi camera, it was used as my allround lens back then, and is now also my favourite on the 7D. My lens is 14 years old now, but is still in great shape and I find it hard to find a younger substitute for this great lens. The lens have seen quite a lot of action, taken its fair share of beatings but have never let me down.....true love I guess ;-)
