ownership:I used to own this lens
compared to:50/2.8 Macro
100/2.8 Macro
price paid:500
positive:Unique 3X-1X life size magnification
Interesting slide copier

negative:Lighting will be a problem without external light source (1200AF) unless use outdoor indoor
Handheld is not pratical/possible due to extreme shallow DOF
Tripod or copy stand is a must
comment:This is a rather special lens for extreme Macro/closeup.
For indoor use, you'll need a ring flash (1200AF etc.)
The working distance is very limited (inch/cm from the front lens!!) and DOF very shallow. For outdoor use, handholding is possible but you are literally inch/cm from the subject and this is good for static object only.

I eventually sold it and use Macro lenses, Minolta Closeup lenses, extension tubes, reverse adapter and bellows to acheive higher magnification.

Motorised zoom and rotation
Very sharp
Included mini tripod
negative:The price!
Lens cap is rubbish
Expensive non-rechargeable battery
comment:This seems to be the lens that everyone wants to try but no-one wants to buy, and I can see why - it's a lot of money for a very specialist lens, even if it does come with a tripod and a hard case. It really is way above any other macro lens I've tried, though, and quality is fantastic - none of the compromises you get when bodging with extension tubes or teleconverters.
Officially, it's meant to be used on a tripod, and the included vertical-mount one is very handy - it's easy to get pin-sharp pictures of anything that will sit still under the tripod. AF works almost all the time (it hunts a bit in low light) and you can also manual focus with the built-in slider rail.
Handheld shooting is also possible - the focus distance means you can often hold the object you're shooting and the lens in your left hand. It takes a bit of practice, but produces some amazing results.
I'm waiting for a 1200AF flash to arrive so I can experiment with that - at present I'm limited to larger apertures which reduces the DoF.

Front lens cover
comment:A beautiful lens. I got it very cheap because of a dust partical inside the lens, which would be relative easy to remove, but I have no problem with it.

Beautiful pictures are possible, but any hand-hold pictures are more or less impossible because of the weight.

The lens comes with a hard case and a nice little stand.
In the case there is a lot of space for accessories.

The front lens cover is a nice metal cover, but the connection with the lens is made with a felt rim

update:
Tested my lens on the a700, and to my surprise... no hunting of the AF.
The lens works just like on the dynax7 and earlier camera´s
(If there´s enough light)
The first impression is that the lens performs better on the a700 in the sharpness rating compared to the 7D.
