ownership:I used to own this lens
compared to:tam 17-50, minolta 50mm f1.4
price paid:L60
positive:Sharp
great colours
f1.7
cheap
negative:green CA
a little soft below f2
sample variation
comment:Cheap and cheerful way to get a fast prime, great for portraits and arty shots where you want to play with the thin DOF. It's a little soft below f2. CA is generally well controlled but there is some green CA at f1.7-2

The more expensive f1.4 version of this lens is sharper between f1.7-4 with better control of green CA. The main problem of this lens is the sample variation, there are loads of samples which are poor above f2.8 but assuming you've got a decent sample then it's a bargain.

If you're worried about the sample variation consider the sony 50mm SAM, the image quality is a little better with less sample variation but the build and AF speed isn't quite as good as this.
