compared to: | Takumar 50/4 - the Takumar was at least as sharp but the rounded aperture shape of this is a big plus. |
price paid: | much too cheap |
positive: | As a macro lens, almost sharp enough straight from 3.5, and superb at non-macro distances at all practical apertures. Rounded aperture shape. Light and easy to hold and carry. |
negative: | An even better macro lens would be even sharper wide open...but in general there aren't any real negatives to this. |
comment: | Not perfect but definitely better than I expected and a keeper for me. |

positive: | Uniformly sharp (reaches sensor resolution in A99M20, great build quality. |
negative: | f/3.5 a bit slow; 1:2 max magnification. |
comment: | Capable of astonishing detail. Shows its stuff on high-res sensors. Carefully shot images (precise focus, tripod, cable release) will make the most of the high-res A99M2 sensor. Sweet "spot" is ~ f/5.6 - f/11. Sharper than the f/1.7 50 always, especially noticeable in corners. Corner-to-corner sharpness makes this an outstanding landscape lens. ALWAYS in my bag. [Update / field results] We went to Alaska in September; it was, largely, cloudy/dull. Got sharp results on dull days (~50% of attempts) HAND HELD with IS on and me braced on railing or leaning against wall -- with ISO 800, shutter faster than 1/100, and aperture f/8; some luminance noise but would not be noticeable in 8"x12" / 100mmx150mm print. |

positive: | Sharp, light, 1:2 macro. |
negative: | Only 1:2, f3.5, plastic build. |
comment: | This lens was produced as a low cost alternative to the 50mm f2.8 RS 1:1 macro - and Minolta made a very good job of it. This is a very capable macro lens, the smaller aperture is of little consequence and most macro shots don't need 1:2 - when it was released the cost saving on its more expensive stablemate made it an attractive choice. However, it has developed a reputation of near perfection, and now sells for as much or more than the f2.8 macros - which is insane. Yes its a very good lens, but the first f2.8 is as sharp, better built, has a wider aperture, and has 1:1 capability. The second generation RS has all of the above and a focus limiter, the Min D/Sony add ADI capability. I have four Minolta 50mms and this is my least favourite, least used - not because it is a bad lens, just that the others do what they do better that it can do and there is nothing it can do that none of the others can. The f1.4 & f1.7 aren't as sharp wide open - but they open a lot wider, the f2.8 is as sharp, has 1:1 macro and simply feels so much better (I seriously like that lens). Compared to my other macros: The Sony DT 30mm is even more plasticky, APS-C only, and it's 1:1 involves getting so close that it gets silly - the f3.5 wins. The Sigma 70mm seems better built, but you always worry a little about what's inside a Sigma in terms of gear stripping, it too requires absurdly close work for full magnification - f3.5 wins. The Sigma 90mm is very nice, a solid compact lens that is very reminiscent of the Min 50mm f2.8 somehow I don't worry about its innards. Like the f3.5 it is 1:2 only, but at a nice stand-off,the f3.5 just edges it on sharpness. I think I'll call it a draw. The Min 100mm f2.8 D is the best macro lens I have experience of and a very fine short tele / portait lens. I love it, the f3.5 loses this one. You can, of course, also use it as a 50mm prime, it just doesn't make much sense to do so if you have so many alternatives. I really wanted to like this lens more than I do and it really is a very nice, very capable lens, but I just don't feel the love. |

comment: | My favorite lens. It lives on my camera. Very sharp, even at 3/5. Great for general photography, stock pictures etc. I love the bokeh. I use it for almost anything really. If I don't take my camera bag out with me (and so am limited to one lens) this is usually what comes with. For the macro stuff I've done (not a lot admittedly) the 3.5 aperture or the magnification ratio an issue. |

comment: | I purchased two of these a couple of years apart. The first wasn't very sharp, but I liked the rendering. I cleaned some crud off of the front element of the second copy. The mechanism would sometimes catch just before 1:2. This lens was $200 when released in 1994 just over $100 cheaper than the 50/2.8. Cosmetically it matches the other RS series lenses. It uses a different optical formula (5/5 vs 6/4) than the older, manual focus Minolta 50mm F3.5 1:2 Macro lenses dating from 1961. This is the simplest A-mount lens in terms of actual parts. "JAPAN" The larger body is used to accommodate a deep fixed hood. The working distance is fairly large because of the fairly low 1:2 maximum reproduction ratio. The field-of-view is slightly narrower than the faster Minolta 50's and significantly narrower than the APS-C 50's. The field-of-view is just slightly wider than the long end of the 18-55 SAM II. This lens is sharper than the old MD 50 F3.5. As far as I know there is no matched extension for 1:1 like there was for MD lens. The 50 F2.8 RS has much more CA even stopped down. |

comment: | Colors are pleasant and saturated, esp. in macro shots. More impressive than colors of Sigma 70/2.8. Good lens for close-up (1:2) and architecture shots. The weak point of this lens is low image quality at full-frame corners - F/8 needed to obtain good peripheral sharpness. |

comment: | This lens is the perfect 75mm walkaround with APS-C cameras. As a portrait lens, the "soft" features of the A57 make this lens sing. It stays on my camera 99% of the time. The recessed optics of this lens act as a sun shade as well. If you can find one, buy it. |

comment: | Great little lens! slightly cooler color than first-gen Maxxum glass, but still excellent. This replaces my 50 1.7 on any daylight outing, due to its superior sharpness and macro capability. I haven't compared it to other Minolta macro lenses, but it has pretty much ousted my Sigma 90 from the small bag (the Sigma still has a place in the backpack, or when I am specifically doing macro work that needs longer working distances). Full Frame update: now that I have used this lens on the a900 and 9xi I'm even more impressed with its performance, all but the corners are very sharp from wide open and stopping down to f5.6 sharpens up the entire frame nicely. When compared to the Minolta AF 50 2.8 and 100 Macros, the 50 f3.5 still comes off as a very capable lens and the handling is faster (since there is no focus limiter and only 1:2 magnification), however the absolute image quality and sharpness of the 50 2.8 is definitely higher. |

comment: | Even at 1:2 reproduction, this is a superb quality lens that produces tack sharp colourful images with buttery smooth bokeh. A compact lightweight macro/portrait prime. At 50mm, it's quite short in terms of macro lenses which I think are best between 90mm-105mm and 1:1 reproduction, but it's still an excellent lens for the price. A real pleasure to use. |

comment: | This is my first macro so I don't have another to compare it to. Comparing it against my 35 F2 is probably not fair as the 35 is stunningly sharp. However the macro outperformed my CZ1680 at 50mm, which is pretty impressive. What I really like is the rich colors, which is more saturated than my other lenses. Also I wouldn't consider this lens that rare as I seen far more examples than lets say the F2 series. |

comment: | This is a fairly hard to find lens, well built and fairly cheap (I paid 100 pounds s/h this year). Its pretty sharp from 3.5, good colours, AF is relatively fast... BUT I don't think it quite deserves the high rating it gets here - both the Tamron and Sony macro lenses I have are as sharp if not sharper and are true 1:1 macros vs the 1:2 of this lens. Nevertheless, if you can find one fairly cheap its a great, small lens to have in your bag. |

I ask in the lens forum wich will be the best 50mm that could bring the sharpeness and microcontrast of my other lenses (Minolta 200mm G HS, Minolta 85mm G, Zeiss 135, STF) and the winner was this lens. I'm glad I ask, now my Sony 50 1.4 stays at home |

comment: | I was going to buy the well regarded 50mm F2.8 instead, but then I found this little gem for about the same money but in like new condition. Since this lens was introduced as a cheaper (and lesser quality) alternative to the F2.8, I hesitated to buy it. I'm glad I did. Everything is well controlled and the glass is sharp and produces beautiful, distortion free, colorful images. This lens is amazing. Super sharp (if F2.8 is sharper, I seriously must have it). I figured, I can get the F2.8 at anytime since there are plenty of them around. This one hardly comes around and rarely in "like new" condition - had to buy it and absolutely love it! If you find one - BUY IT, DON'T THINK TWICE! |

comment: | I recently purchased this lens for my models and random things I thought that looked cool up close. So far I have enjoyed this lens. I went to my local camera shop who only sale Nikons and canons. I was told that they once had Minolta products a long time ago. So I stopped and asked if they had anything for Minolta/Sony. They searched around and actually found this little guy behind some Canon lenses. The best part of my story is that the lens was still new, in its box with all warranty papers. The lens produces exceptionally great detail photos. The colors are outstanding and I think this is going to be part of my personal collection till I die! Thank Minolta! If you find one of this new or old. I would Highly recommend it! |

I don't think there are any lens that is sharper the the 50mm F3.5 marco at its price range. AF is fast and accurate. Highly recommeded for close-up work as well as general use. |
