positive:Size, weight - a pocketable 80-200. Neat fixed lens cap.
negative:Fixed lens cap doesn't protect filters.
Vignetting at wide end - caused by lens cap?
comment:I put this lens on my A900 because it was time for some Day 80 shots for the Day Prime 2019 challenge - and this was my only option. I wasn't expecting much - its reputation preceded it. I have a copy because it was cheap enough to buy just to see what it was really like.

The first thing to say is that it is a good deal better than I expected. Central sharpness is decent even wide open and it tightens up by f8. I wouldn't use it in preference to the beercan (70-210mm f4) it is nowhere near as good, but it is much, much, smaller and portable - a pocket sized 80-200mm lens. To be fair, cost and size are the only reasons to buy this lens in preference to the beercan or the 70-210mm f3.5-4.5 which are considerably better performers.

I often go for a walk with a prime fitted to my camera - being a little paranoid about missing a shot I often carry an 18-55mm SAM II in my pocket, just in case - not the best lens I have in that range, but decent and pocketable. The 80-200 isn't as good a lens, but it may find itself in my other pocket at times.

UPDATE: I've had this lens on my A77 and A900 over the past few days and am increasingly impressed by its sharpness and bokeh. However, there is very noticeable vignetting FF at 80mm - easily fixed in pp but not ideal. I suspect that this is caused by the neat fixed lens cap - easy to see why this idea didn't catch on.

UPDATE 8/11/19: I overlooked a couple of other contenders for a small (if not so lightweight) telezoom. The xi version of this lens is essentially the same lens with the complications of xi - there is nothing to recommend it above the manual zoom. Then there is the old Minolta - AF 100-200 F4.5. In terms of IQ it is better than either of the cheap 80-200s, perhaps a bit weighty to carry in your pocket, but doesn't take up much space in the bag.

positive:Very light weight. Very sharp. Too cheap on Ebay. F4.5-F5.6 is really not a problem with today's noise free high ISO's. My lens is like new for the record.
negative:Needs lens shade as a permanent fixture. Some C.A. but you have to look for it.
comment:Sharpness surprisingly good. All in all, a decent light lens that will produce a flawless 16x20 print.

positive:weigth, built-in front cap, price
negative:Aperture, sharpness & nothing for the price
comment:Pass this if you want a tele lens, useless soft wide open and long end, sharper when stepped to f8 but not so sharp so I used it to make portrait shots

Good things are lens cap and zoom doesn't seem to creep

positive:- small and light weight

- built in lens cap is cool
negative:- IQ
- build quality
comment:well, this isn't a lens to brag about, or to let other people see you using on your camera lest you will be forever looked down upon by your fellow shooters... ;)

it's very compact and very light weight (due to low quality plastic build), but if you actually needed a quick and dirty 200mm zoom that could literally fit in your pant pocket, this is the lens for you. I have managed some fairly nice portraits with this lens, but shooting anything beyond 20 feet away will yield fairly disastrous results.

built-in lens cap is neat, and actually, considering I paid under 10 dollars for it, it's good value. there are times when a low cost, if-it-gets-wrecked-it-doesn't-matter lens comes in quite handy, and for that reason, it's not so bad.

clarity in the middle
Great built in lens cap
(instant)
negative:a few soft edges at the ends
comment:Although a bit soft at the bottom and the top there is great clarity in the middle. (I don’t mind a little soft here and there). As with all other lens the more you use it the more you know it's uses. The range filled in a gap I had and did so admirably. Very underrated lens. I obtained this at a pawn shop for a small amount of money, for only twenty bucks. I highly recommend hitting the pawn shops to all you Minolta lens shoppers, I could not be more pleased.

positive:Well cheep I paid less than Ł20 for this including p&p light weight
negative:Slow, not extreamly sharp (but good for portraits)
comment:I picked this up for peanuts off ebay, its not a bad lens but not a great lens either. I dont think its as good as the Tamron 18-200 but it is better than the Canon 100-300, Sorry havnt used the Tokina properly yet. Its slightly soft but that lede its self nicey to portraits. The lens cap arrangement is cool though
