ownership: | I own this lens |
compared to: | 16-35 zeiss is much heavier and narrower view than the 12mm ultra wide fisheye. These are apples to oranges anyway. |
price paid: | 350usd |
positive: | This is a non circular fisheye. It is Very very wide. 12mm Has huge depth of field even wide open. Great for night scape work and Arches National Park. It is a true F2.8 so I can focus on a star with digital zoom using the view finder. |
negative: | My copy would not focus past 5 feet when I got it. I removed a few adjustment shims and now the manual focus scale is spot on. Poor quality control I guess. Now its a keeper. It is entirely plastic except for the mounting plate. I guess distortion is a negative? it is a fisheye so not sure what number to give it maybe a 5 for appropriate distortion. |
comment: | I really enjoy my full manual non circular fisheye (ultra wide angle with moderate barrel distortion). This can be "unfished" in PS to be just a Ultra wide angle lens. Look up the hyper-focal distance of a 12mm FF at F2.8, its 8 feet. 16mm Zeiss is 15 feet twice as far. 12mm 2.8 is a great combination for near/far night photography and getting most of the Milky Way in one shot. This is an artful/artistic lens that has a learning curve to master its full potential. There is nothing else like this lens really. If mine had been properly assembled, I would have no complaints at all. Be careful of your tripod and feet being in the pictures! I do not use it all time but always have it in my pack. Its not heavy/its plastic and glass. Note: this lens being a fixed manual focus type has very few parts and was the easiest lens I have ever worked on. |
